I believe people who commit crimes because of a mental illness should be treated first and foremost. I dont mean any sort of normal hospital, I mean a proper full on mental hospital where he would receive treatment for the illness which could extend to castration/hormone therapy whatever. It's not exactly the comparative barrel of laughs you seem to think it is.

Then, possibly prison, I dont know how exactly it works, afaik he would have to serve some of the sentence.

Mental Illness or not, the guy is old enough to know the difference between right and wrong.

If found guilty he should be locked up for 15yrs+

    *facepalm*

    Mental illnesses cloud your judgement.

If someone is depressed and subsequently kill themselves, their judgement was impaired to the point where they saw no reason to live anymore. Depression is a mental illness. Get it?

True, I remember years ago, a photo was been texted around of some really young girl in her school uniform on her back, legs spread. Made the news and all. some of my mates got it, and texted it. They're not perverts, just idiots. we'll wait and see what the exact details are I guess.

And did the original sender of the picture, possibly the girl herself, get charged for distributing child porn? Probably not.

That Sun article is very low on facts. I am reserving judgement until I know more.

    No, I wouldn't, shockingly.

Pedophilia is classed as a mental illness, if what he's accused of is true, there's something seriously wrong with him, he should be treated, not told to kill himself/told x hopes he gets murdered in jail/whatever.
Totally agree. Unfortunately society deems differently. They don't want it to be put down to a disorder, that way it will have to be accepted as an issue. No no no, societies view on paedophilia is that it's a recent scurge and if we keep catching them and locking them up it'll go away, like smallpox. I'm awaiting the bloodthirsty crowds that condemn paedophilia in the strongest possible way but in the same breath call for public castrations of paedophiles.

    Like this place?

I'd agree with giving them treatment, but as far as I'm concerned they should never be put in a position to do damage to a kid again. Keep them in treatment or whatever in my opinion. I have to say that I don't think I'll ever be convinced pedophilia can be "cured".

Neither can alcoholism some say. Controlled though possibly? With support from a new thinking society/friends/family who accept that nobody chooses to have these urges? Anyway, different thread I think needed for this, at the end of the day nothing's been proven here but will be keeping an eye on developments.

Not talking about depression here, i'm talking about a 35yr old man 'allegedly' conspiring to rape a 1yr old.

We're not, but we are talking about a man who seems to be mentally ill.

You're capacity to make a proper decision is inhibited when you have a mental illness.

I don't fully buy the whole paedophiles aren't to blame, they have a mental illness defence. I think it's far too easy a get out of jail free card for people to play. Just because someone's interests lie outside the social norm and what is generally accepted does not mean they are ill, some people are just a little messed up. You could easily argue that an adult man who rapes an adult woman isn't a vile predator but rather he has a mental illness and can't help himself.

    Talk about a career ender!

The lead singer of Welsh rock band Lostprophets, Ian Watkins, has been charged with child sex offences, police have said.

It's definitely because they didn't sing "Shinobi Vs. Dragon Ninja" when they played in Ireland a few years ago!

Aside from that: what a f*cking tosser!

They played it back in April!

On a different note, there are some serious misconceptions about mental illness flying around this thread...

I think this is the site a poster refered to earlier.
It's all a bit gossipy but some serious allegations none the less, inclusing Mr Watkins apparent desire to spread HIV and the rumours of a girlfriend finding information on how to drug children on his laptop.
Seems this arrest has been a long time coming.

I think offenders who are deemed "criminally insane" (though I'm not sure if they use that term any more) serve their sentence in a maximum security psychiatric hospital - places like Broadmoor in the UK. However, I'm not sure that simply being found guilty of crimes related to paedophilia would be enough to have someone deemed mentally ill and sent to a hospital in a court of law, especially since he's pleading not guilty rather than guilty by way of insanity. The types of criminals that end up in the psychiatric hospitals are the seriously fcuked up ones. I'm fairly sure Ian Brady has spent most of his incarcerated life in a mental health facility.

In relation to the story, reluctant to throw around labels or make assumptions based on the lack of details so far. It's a fairly fcuked up accusation though and shocking given their fanbase. I remember girls a bit younger than me who used to love them. Was never 100% familiar with them myself, to be honest. Still mad stuff though.

This is really incredible, shocking stuff. I have been very familiar with this band for the duration of their career and have seen them live a few times. Excellent studio and live band. My gut instinct is that something just does not seem right about this. I find it very hard to believe. Hopefully he is innocent and will be exonerated. If he isn't, then he deserves the full rigours of the law.

The police don't deny bail to possibly innocent people. I reckon they have him all but nailed to the wall

Just read this in the Metro on the commute to work.
I felt physically shivery at reading it.

A one year old?? A one year old!!

What an absolute f**ked up scumbag!!:mad:

I hope the band members are coping ok with this, I'd say it was quite the blow... even if they had inklings, hearing that properly in court and including animals with childen and whatever else. Anyone would be hurt, shocked and confused.

    Ugh  Sick and disgusting!

Edit: Just seen on their website

Following charges made today against Ian Watkins, we find ourselves in a state of shock. We are learning about the details of the investigation along with you. It is a difficult time for us and our families, and we want to thank our fans for their support as we seek answers.

    F**ker.

Of course he should be treated for a mental illness, planning to rape a child and a desire to spread HIV? He's obviously perverted and obviously needs treatment taken seriously.

But it doesn't take away from the crime he has been charged with.

The notion that the band knew this was going on is still insane, if anybody in the band or management knew what was happening they would have tried to get him sorted before it blew up into this.

Jaysus, just googled there to see if he's HIV+ and there's stuff online from months ago saying he rapes kids...

    Can't see that he's HIV+ though.

Taken from a post in Harmony Central

I googled to see if the band had released a statement and came across this site http://www.whosdatedwho.com/tpx_74997/ian-watkins/

Check out the comments from 11 months ago !

Basically a bunch of girls who slept with him etc... talking about him. At the time im sure it seemed like a bunch of dumped groupies getting pissed at him but now.....

Bear in mind, these were posted 11 months ago

"Numerous girls have seen the child porn on his comp, and shannon saw the stuff about drugging children and he told her he wanted to drug and (word beginning with R) children, and that is what he has been doing for the last at least 2years, probably more, that's not rumours that's fact. He has pic and vids of him doing it and he's sent these to people so there is evidence that he's sent these pics of very young girls being R'd by him. Fact. I bet his little obsessed skanks are helping him do it too"

"He does the usual and tries to say that people are mental or that the pics aren't of him with these little girls and boys he still sent images of them being r'd still sent child p orn which itself is a serious offence and he has child po rn on his comp. His time is running out, he's done too many bad things to too many people and he shows no remorse for anything he's done. His days are over"

"Boys or girls, ian pays his sluts to let him f*ck their their kids. That's what Jo meant when she said to him "big deal you f*cked a 5yr old little girl" she tried to cover it up by saying it was a typo and meant 15yr old later but I know what she really meant. He even takes pics and vids of these kids. What does Jamie have to do with anything?"

Lots of teenage girls ranting at each other in there and at the time im sure it all seemed like a bunch of sour groupies but it now looks like they were all telling the truth. Apparently, an ex, Jo, reported him to the police a year ago for it and thats why they broke up.

I don't know for sure he's HIV positive btw, it came up on google that he was, but y'know. Somebody else said in the thread earlier that he's apparently spoken of a desire to spread HIV, that's really what I was talking about.

If all that stuff in UPO's post above is true this is probably something the police have been working on for ages. As in they probably have a lot of evidence.
