Google Drive question -- access

I use Google Drive a good bit and last night I uploaded a video that I wanted to share with my brother in Australia. I went into sharing and selected 'those with the link' option. About 30 seconds after doing this I noticed that Google was informing me that at least 10 'anonymous users' were accessing the document and the number was increasing. I quickly changes the settings back to private. My quesion is how could the link be accessed so quickly if the the setting was set to those who only know the link? Is this an indicator of spyware/malware on my laptop or is it that sharing option too public.
(In the end I shared using the 'email collaborators' option)

It's most likely bots crawl the internet checking links and trying to login to random ip addresses. Why not just share it with him alone by setting it as only accessible by collaborators, get them to setup a Gmail if they don't have one

Sounds reasonable. Especially as the user names were all 'anonymous_user1' or something like that anyway.

Yeah, I did that in the end. Thanks.

How did you send him the link?

Boardsie Enhancement Suite - a browser extension to make using Boards on desktop a better experience (includes full-width display, keyboard shortcuts, dark mode, and more). Now available through your browser's extension store.

    Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/boardsie-enhancement-suite/

Like I said above, initially I had sent it using the share option 'only those with the link'. You can then send that link via FB in a private message (amongst other options)

I meant how exactly did you transmit that link to him. You selected "Anyone with the link" which returns a link that you can send him. How did you transmit it to him?

In a private message via Facebook

It's possible Facebook have automated bots which would scan private messages to, for example, check for malware in links. Unlikely that would cause 10+ users though.

Did you double-check with your brother that he didn't post it anywhere public (Facebook status, Twitter etc), or pass it on to anyone else who might have?

No that's not possible as I had made the link active for less than 30 seconds before the access notifications started to appear.
