So apparently Sega didn't buy WH40K:
    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-03-15-games-workshop-licenses-warhammer-40k-to-slitherine
Maybe Sega didn't and won't acquire the Warhammer 40,000 licence after all, because Games Workshop has announced a W40K deal with someone else. That someone else is Slitherine, a developer and publisher of historical strategy games galore, most on PC, some on Mac and even fewer on iPad. The deal means Slitherine will make a W40K strategy game. Development is already under way on multiple platforms.

I think a homeworld kickstarter would be a roaring success.

Are any big companies going down that route? It's a way to offset some of the risk in a risk-averse industry.

there is a homeworld kick starter

www.savehomeworld.com i think... or something like that - in work so cant check.

I think I heard about that on Weekend Confirmed or something but was left a bit cold with them being a bit unknown.

There's only 10 days to go and they're 35% short of their goal.

Not sure what I'd really want from a kickstarter - I don't know the industry well enough to know who'd make a good fist of the game (aside from obvious heavy hitter developers).

According to this article in PC Gamer Games Workshop aren't going to sell rights exclusively for WH40K.

Slitherine are going to be making a turn based WH40K game but that doesn't seem to automatically mean the end of the Dawn of War franchise.
What will the game be? We don’t really know yet – much of the details of the deal are being kept under wraps. All we know for sure is it’ll be a turn-based strategy, and that it’s being developed for multiple, as yet unnamed, platforms. Given Slitherine’s back-catalogue, this could mean the most faithful adaptation of tabletop Warhammer to date.

With Slitherine taking hold of the 40K license, what does that mean for the series’ previous custodians, Relic. Actually, not that much: in a statement to GamesIndustry, Games Workshop say they’re moving to a less exclusive licensing philosophy. “The days of monolithic Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 licenses on all platforms are behind us. In the future, games based on our properties will be platform and subject specic, which is great news as it means there are far more opportunities than before.”

More War for everyone then. In addition to whatever Slitherine are working on, we also know Creative Assembly are creatively assembling something in the trad-fantasy Warhammer setting.

    Thats great news.

Slitherine do some fantastic strategy games.

If they do a decent stab at the 40k tabletop in a turnbased PC game I'll be a happy Imperial Guardsmen

    Edit: from the Slitherine website
Slitherine links with Games Workshop® on new licensing agreement

World leader of tabletop wargaming joins forces with strategy video gaming expert

Slitherine (www.slitherine.com) and Games Workshop (www.games-workshop.com), two giants in their respective specialist markets, have signed a deal to produce a strategy video game set in the popular Warhammer® 40,000® universe.

"This deal represents yet another testament to our continuous aim to reach new audiences, without losing sight of who we are and what we do best", said JD McNeil, Chairman of the Slitherine Group. "It's all about creating strategy games that are targeted to a particular audience and addressing a very specific need in the market. The Warhammer 40,000 setting is a perfect fit for the style of strategy games that we make and will be very popular with fantasy and science fiction fans alike. Joining forces with Games Workshop will allow us to bring an wonderfully deep and appropriate IP to the Turn Based Strategy genre”.

Details of the deal including the content and features of the game have not yet been announced, but development is already underway on multiple platforms, involving the best talents in design and development available to the Slitherine Group.

Jon Gillard, Head of Licensing at Games Workshop said: “Slitherine are clearly established and successful masters of their genre of games, and there are many fans of their work here at GW. It’s a pleasure to work with such like minded individuals who share our passion for strategy games of all types”.

Damnit, I was promised that in the future there is only War...

Well thats kinda good news that its on a case by case basis. While Slitherine might make a good strategy game, I am still holding out hope for some more games similar to Space Marine, either FPS/TPS or even an RPG or two.

    I really enjoyed Spacemarine

For a game that got less than 30 hours of my Attention, SM was dope. To-the-point action that satisfied your pants off with jetpacks and hammers and giant building-sized things making things go BOOM.

looks like the homeworld ip maybe purchased as the Save homeworld kickstarter reached its goals to purchase the ip

Save Homeworld campaign fails to secure the rights to the space RTS series

I'd be lying if I said I thought they ever had a chance with what they had raised. On the other hand, should be interesting to see who did buy it.

I'm kind of glad they didn't get it, as i don't want a mobile version of Homeworld, i want Homeworld 3.

Will have to see who did get it though...

Presumably it being bought means that someone is actually going to make it then?

I can't imagine they buy the rights and then just sit on them...

Crossing my fingers Crytek got a hold of Darksiders, so many of the vigil team ended up there that made the first 2 games fantastic.

They already said they will be bidding for it. I don't expect to many companies will go for it knowing the original team want it tbh

    From Randy Pitchford's Twitter...
Homeworld Step 1: Bring solid, pure builds of the original game and sequel to modern digital PC platforms. We love you Relic!!

It's a good start at least. As for future instalments, I am somewhat less than enthused.

I'm equally bummed about Darksiders though. Based on their previous releases, I can't see Nordic Games funding a third iteration to a level anywhere close to where it would need to be. :(

    Gearbox.

The people who took a beloved sci fi franchise and remade it into an AAA budget game with an FFF rating?

And they won a bid on a beloved sci fi franchise and plan to do the same?

    Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,746 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

i'm surprised the winning bid was so low for a classic game. Everyone i know who plays/played games has played and loved the original homeworld.

The Escapist made a very good point. Gearbox make shooters. Apart from a single Tony Hawk game they've made shooters. That's fine. Why on earth are they buying a RTS IP? Not only that but not a bread and butter RTS like Starcraft or Command & Conquer but an unusual 3d space RTS.

I mean if Relic turned around and bought the Borderlands IP we'd all be fairly damn sceptical about it no?
