Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Regular drop-outs in Navan over the weekend. It was down for hours last night too. Repeated drop-outs this afternoon. UPC has really gone downhill recently.

Same here, north Dublin. Have been very positive about UPC for a few years ..... very unhappy of late. Hopefully a high volume of posts here will grab the reps attention.

    Hi folks,

Just an update regarding the issues you have reported:

We have been contacted by one of our international carriers about an undersea fibre break which inadvertently occurred on their network, and appears to have affected the quality of our broadband service intermittently for some customers in recent days.

Our engineers have worked on a resolution to minimize the current situation, while also keeping in touch with our partners regarding full restoration of the fibre link. We believe that work carried out over the past couple of days has largely removed any impact to our customers.

We apologise to customers who may have experienced some intermittent disruption to their broadband service but would also reassure you that we continue to work as hard as possible to keep any inconvenience to a minimum.

If anyone is still experiencing problems please PM UPC: Rep with their account details, and we can follow up with you.

    Thanks

Thanks eamonn. The gamers will be relieved when the link goes live again.

My issue isnt related though as I lose my public which wouldnt be related to international Tier1s. We had a call from tech support but I was out at the time. He checked the line and rebooted the modem. Will monitor it and see how we get on.

Fine for a couple of days, poor again tonight.

All tests run from a directly connected laptop on a short 100Mbs link to the EPC. For Shared test the WNDR3800 and the rest of the premises are connected, Solo thye are not.

Tech visited, support centre refused to deal with a bridged modem. VDSL is looking more and more appealing.

Also in Bridge Mode here ED E (EPC3925 > TP-Link TL-R460 Router + TP-Link TL-WA830RE AP) and lately when it has been disconnecting (as in the UPC), I can't access my router and I think it's due to the way the EPC sets up the Bridge Mode. I updated my router config to Static IP as opposed to Dynamic (default IP, Gateway and Subnet with Google DNS). Oddly, I seen immediate improvements in line quality (from PingTest.net) and will be monitoring for stability. I know UPC don't use real static IP's but mine hasn't changed in a few months so this should be ok. Is yours currently set to Dynamic IP? What router do you use also? Hope it's not coincidental but worth giving it a go.

Its a WNDR3800 and it is DHCPing its WAN interface yes. Im waiting to hear back from their networks team now, will see what they say then maybe try that.

Usually our leases last a month or more so that would be a somewhat useable solution.

Yeah, only noticed it yesterday as I rebooted my modem while doing some other troubleshooting and noted the DS/US lights flashing together, so checked up when it was finished.

    Hi,

Are you running this test over wifi or ethernet? Can you run a test on speedtest.upc.ie and let us know the result? Can you also confirm whether you are seeing this issue on more than one device?

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Having the same problems at the moment. Every 40-60 seconds the connection speed will just drop dead but i won't lose connection to the net. Not to bad when browsing the net but during an online game or stream its terrible. Started over the last 4 days and seems to happen from about 8pm - 2am. Speed is fine any other time of the day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,932 ✭✭✭YouSavedMyLife

Don't know if you still have problems with this but i seem to have solved my problem. Ran a few tests to google.com with the same ethernet cable on a laptop on the same network and was getting under 10ms constant Was getting random spikes of 3000ms on the PC...

Turns out the problem was my PC and not UPC or the network. I simply disabled my network adapter then enabled it. For the last 10 minutes straight have been getting under 10ms constant to google.com. Cant say it solved my problem yet, but its looking good so far. Will see how it is tomorrow...

Weird one today. Connection dropped out, I was frustrated but a speed test two minutes later had me scratching my head.

It peaked at 117Mb down, shortly thereafter it was hitting 95Mb. Those tests arent logged as the account wasn't logged in but I've just got some that are.

Appears to be fluctuating a fair bit. Will test a bit more.

not sure if its a similiar issue I'm having, but since the Thomson modem was updated to 1.75 , I get a complete loss of service regularly between the hours of 7pm and 10pm almost nightly. The upstream connection drops completely and the only solution is a reboot of the modem.

I was getting those speeds occassionaly. Normally we get almost full dl speed on wifi. But sometimes it drops to almost nothing for hours. Rang upc last sat. The girl said there was definitely a problem with the signal. They came out monday. The guy was very thorough. He spent about an hour testing all the lines in the house. He said there is a problem with the cables the builders put in the house about 6 yrs ago. So they are coming back friday to put a new cable into house. He cant understand how we have been getting the good speeds up to now.

We've had it checked multiple times in our case, including by a supervisor. The area was upgraded less than two years ago and ours is a brand new drop from the trunk on the main road. All perfect.

We're on a short tap there are very few users. Most on the road are on DSL or none at all (Lots of elderly folk).

When I last checked nobody else was having issues.

Seeing pretty crappy performance to WoT EU servers so booted up ping plotter for a little over an hour. Both login.p1.worldoftanks.eu and login.p2.worldoftanks.eu along with eircom.net see 10-30% packet loss on the UPC boundary IP 79.97.209.1

Other than this the connection has been pretty stable though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,487 ✭✭✭✭Alun

It's worth bearing in mind that when internet routers start to get really busy one of the things they'll start doing is dropping ICMP echo traffic (i.e. pings), so some packet loss can be expected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,169 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Yeah, I understand that ICMP will be dropped at the first sign of load but as an end user there's not a huge amount you can do to diagnose.

WoT has a packet loss warning which goes red when there's a high level of loss, I was geting that on a minute or two.minute basis. Latency was fluctuating from 45-95.

This may be wargamings own server farm, can't be sure.

This has been happening every day for the past week. Anyone know what might be causing it? I did reset my modem last week to get a new IP address but I set it up the exact same way as before (bridged mode).

    Speeds randomly drop to this.

Exactly my issue. It gets sent to the void that is the UPC networks team and nothing ever comes back.

Recently its been *mostly* well behaved bar the few posts above.

Im convinced that this issue is contention or congestion.

I never ever get full 200mbps unless its 3.00 am on a Sunday morning :)

Its supposed to be uncongested but between 6.00pm and say 9.00 pm Im lucky to get 80meg.Sometimes its as low as 20-30.

Makes sense as everyone is coming in from work etc and switching on their pc`s,laptops, tablets etc.

Reboot the modem and its fine for a an hour or so but between these times forget it.

Ive had 3 engineer visits,3 new modems, the cabling to the house changed completely and its still the same.

UPC should give us full speed at all times and stop trying to keep increasing their speeds.

Id prefer a solid 100 meg line that was always 100 meg rather than a 200meg line that's rarely 200meg.

2 engineer visited my home lately, one said my line inside the wall is damaged and he cant do anything. Once he is gone and everything work fine...for a month and then same thing happen again and this time I got dc every 2-5 mins...twitter upc support regards of the issue and they suggest me to restart the modem as they cant see anything wrong with my network, i didnt bother to as I already restart it 5-6 times before I tweet them. All of sudden after I made a coffee and everything went back to normal...happened again last week and the second engineer told me he cant find any issue and he is saying there is nothing wrong with the cable inside the wall...once he left, everything went back to normal again...until today. Will see about tomorrow before I contact UPC again.

I have been using UPC for almost 4 years now and the service in the past 3 months is kinda unacceptable.

    To re-iterate a reference point.

3 year old new UPC node in Bray near seafront.

    Have UPC about 18months.

For the first few weeks we suffered random disconnects, Speed tests rarely exceeded 75mb on our 100mbit connection and speeds dropped even lower between 6pm and midnight. Never to the extent suffered by unfortunate ED E though.

Soon as I bridged my CISCO EPC3925 to an Asus router I haven't suffered a single disconnect and our connection speed is a rock solid 105/10mbit and after the upgrade 123/10mbit 24/7/365.

Whether that helps anyone elses diagnosis,I don't know.

Bridging definitely helps with overall throughput, the 3925 just can't handle any sort of load. Unfortunately it doesn't prevent whatever I'm seeing. I'm sure if we had access to verbose logs we'd see straight away what's going on. Never gonna happen though.
