Just saw that gem of a comment on the front page of last week's weekend edition of the Limerick leader.

So after all the talk and bs, we are now being told that the Opera Centre project will notbe suitable for large major name retailers.

So all the talk of major ratailers being interested and lining up, all the talk of M&S, the city museum and what not looks like it was just bullshyte that allowed various mayors and councillors to get headlines for themselves.

Limerick city council have now owned the buildings for well over a year now, and despite all the talk of what was just about to go there, it remains nothing more than an eyesore.

If large retail stores cannot go there and smaller units are the only option, then why the hell did they bother ousting all the small businesses that were already there?

What I'm reading from that is that with the knock down price that M&S are probably looking for in rent the council would need to offset that with 2 other major anchor tenants and at least 60 smaller tenants to make it worth (1) the council/landlords while and (2) worth the bother of the other anchor tenants financially / footfall wise.

It strikes me that they don't actually have a clue what they are doing, and that all the so called plans for that section of the city have been nowt more than wind.

It was going to be a complex with big stores and big names. It was going to be a section of UL. It was going to be a new upmarket area for people to live. It was going to house the city museum before Xmas 2012 (this claim was made in the last 12 months). There was also talk of the skywalk between it and Arthurs Quay in 20102.

There have been lots of claims about what is "just about" to go there, but once the talk of plans gets looked in any sort of detail then it changes and we go back to the same old talk of how there is a new plan in the works that will be published soon.

They knew the amount of room they had to work with, they knew the potential square footage that would be available, they knew what they would or would not give permission to be built there, yet years and years after the project was just about to begin they still don't seem to be any clearer as to what they can put there or how to attract someone there.

How could they have expected to attract a major retailer when they cannot get their own stories straight as to what can be built there?

Come February I expect another big headline in the Limerick Leader telling of another grand plan that is on the cusp of starting, and of how thei new idea will turn Limerick city into a major attraction.

Hard not to be cynical about any announcements regarding the Opera centre when there has been so much smoke blown.
