Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

hey i had either been planing on going to Canada or new zealand in the new year. the job i have been offered is a trade assistant .the wage is 20 dollars and hour. So that would be 900 dollars a week obviously i would lose a bit of that in tax but what i would be left with would this be enough to survive on for a single 23 year old lad? i am sure overtime would be available but for now i just have to go with what i was told of the 45 hour week. Basically i am terrified of going out there an finding that this money is not enough to survive on:o i will be going out with about 4k thanks.

    Happy christmas:D

At 20 dollars an hour your looking at around 650 a week after tax. It's tight...rent should set u back roughly 150 a week leaving you with 500 a week for shopping, clothes and going out and trust me it's not a lot. What skills have you got? 20 is pretty low. I started out on 18 an hour and I went through my 4k savings pretty quick. At 30 an hour now I get around 1000 a week and I fly through that too. Can I ask who/what company you are coming out with? Depending on your skills you should definitely look for better paying work when you get out here because while you'll live on 650 a week you won't exactly be living it up.

I was just looking at the tax calculator on the NZ inland revenue website ( http://www.ird.govt.nz/calculators/tool-name/tools-t/calculator-tax-rate.html ) and at 900 a week or (900*4*12) 43,200 a year it says you pay 6580 in tax and would end up with a weekly take home of (((43200 - 6580)/12)/4) of 762. The tax rates could be different for WHV people though!

I'm not sure what it's like over there now but I was there in 06/07 and was getting by on $16 an hour for a 40 hour week. My rent was 90 a week (it was pretty cheap and I wouldn't think you'd get one like it now) and inclusive of bills I think so that was handy. I wasn't Johnny flash the Cash or anything but I could get by without going too much into my savings (now when I was working for minimum wage it was a different story!!).

I was over there with a friend who was an electrician and he seemed pretty happy with his employer and how they were treated. He worked directly for the company with no agency involved though. He also had overtime when he wanted (which was alot as he was saving) and managed to get a couple of nixers too. What it's like now I can't comment but back then he was happy out. This was in Wellington.
