i have attached some pics, the blade is very badly chipped and stained, the hilt is loose and there is no scabbard.
the hilt has a crown with the letters "iv"
any info is very greatly appreciated. Merry Xmas to you all!!

The sword you have is a William IV 1822 pattern officers sword made approximately from 1830 to 1837 mostly used for ceremonial purposes,as swords go it was considered to be near useless for fighting. It was available to all ranks from sergeant upwards, however officers were expected to purchase their own swords. These private purchases had to fall within certain specifications but many officers had their own interpretations of the specifications so there are many variations of this sword. As for value given the poor condition of your example I think approx E120 would be a realistic value

Its British, sales wise you would be better off if you contacted an auction house or two and get it properly evaluated and appraised and maybe then enter it in a specialist sale.I know that limerick auction rooms have at least 2 militaria sales per year.I would also advise you to do some research on the sword yourself see if you can find makers marks, serial numbers etc. Some makers are more rare than others and can make a huge difference to the value regardless of its condition.Alternatively you could take a chance with ebay or adverts
