The careers in nursing and midwifery booklet can be found through this link for download. http://www.nursingboard.ie/en/careers.aspx
That will provide you with all colleges that offer each course and the hospitals they are affiliated with. I would recommend basing your choices on what hospital you will be placed in, placement makes up most of the course. Apply through the CAO before 1st February using the mature nursing cao codes. The nursing career centre will then send you an invitation for your aptitude test in April I think and your offer will be based on your result from the aptitude test. You don't need a cao book, you can apply online through their website. http://www.cao.ie/index.php
Hope that answered some questions, if you've any more just shout.

You must be living in the UK for three years prior to the first day of the course in order to get the bursary.

    See this link: http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/Students/Documents/Students/FAQ_2_0612.pdf

You should qualify for free fees though. A friend of mine is heading to Scotland to study nursing next September as she will get free fees. She has a degree so she'd have to pay the fees here.

    Hey WildRosie,

I know i will not get the bursary for the courses in england but for northern ireland i have heard that ppl from the republic are entitled to it, but then others say wer not, so confused as if that was the case i would do the 2 years in england instead of 3 in northern ieland

I've never heard it and I looked into it last year. Here's a link to NI NHS Bursary Office http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/nhs-and-social-work-students

There's no mention of ROI students, just EU students who are not eligible so I guess ROI students are covered there. Pretty sure ROI students aren't eligible but contact the Bursary Office to be sure.

i sent an email to these ones below and they said ROI currently do receive it but it may not always be this way, are they completely different to the link you sent, i would hate to accept an offer thinking i would be getting it but to fid out a few weeks later I wouldnt be when it could be too late then if I pay for accomodation:(

Well is says here http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/nhs-and-social-work-students that EU students are not entitled to NHS bursaries unless they satisfy the residence conditions. Maybe thats what they meant? I don't see them mention ROI separately from the EU anywhere.

This site says pretty much the same http://www.borderpeople.info/index/faqs/faqs-education.htm

That site you linked to does seem to be a government site but doesnt seem to have been updated since 09/10? I would email these guys http://www.studentfinanceni.co.uk/portal/page?_pageid=54,1267813&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL because they administer the NHS bursaries in Northern Ireland and get it in writing from them.

The only mention I can see anywhere for funding for ROI students in NI is to apply to your local VEC for a maintenance grant which wouldn't apply in your case.

I'm on a healthcare course at the moment and hoping to do nursing next year. All my classmates that have degrees are going to Scotland and England next year. I'm sure (well, hope!) we would have been advised to apply to NI if there was additional funding available there.

Will you let us know when you find out for sure?

yes exactly it seems to say on that link that we defo would not get any funding, I have also sent an email to the university of ulster and got a reply saying "As an applicant from the Republic you would be entitled to get your course fees paid by the DHSS and you would also receive a bursary payment of £5,100 per annum, paid monthly." but have not received anything bk from Queens...:O it doesnt make sense that they would say that on the website though, I will email the pl you said & I might also ring Queens aswell. I cant afford to do the 3 years of the bsc in England without funding that's why if im going to england iv applyed for the 2 year msc or post grad diplomas...i have heard queens in Belfast is very hard to get into:O
I will let you know when I get a reply from them:)

    I just saw this: http://www.ulster.ac.uk/newstudentfinance/index-07.html
What help is available to residents of the Republic of Ireland or other European Union countries (outside the U.K)?

ROI students (and those from other E.U. countries outside the U.K.) are only eligible to apply for the new Fees Loan of up to £3,070 sterling a year to cover the costs of their tuition fees.

They are not eligible to receive the new Maintenance Grant nor the existing Student Loan (for living costs), both of which are available to UK residents only. Neither are they eligible to receive University of Ulster bursaries.

Eligibility for the University of Ulster’s Scholarships is currently under consideration.

but m wondering is the bursary that they were on about in my email is that especially for nurses and funded by the health board? although that could be seen as a university of ulster bursary aswell:O so confusing:O i think ill just have to ring them:O

just seen this info aswelll i know its n 2008 but the must have been giving some sort of bursary then:O

    http://www.askaboutmoney.com/showthread.php?t=73847

would you study in NI instead of england if you received this?

I think the whole thing is clear as mud, but I'd be surprised if it was available to ROI students (pleasantly surprised though!) I *think* the rules for the NHS bursary are the same i.e. three years residency in the UK but would love to be wrong.

I would definitely consider it. I qualify for free fees here, but no grant. It'd be very handy to be two hours drive from home but not have the pressure of coming up with €2,250 each year. I qualify for BTEA too. And the course is only three years there. Only difficulty is that Queens is very competitve, interviews and all that, and I want to Children's & General here which isn't available there. Applications have to be in two weeks from today so hopefully you'll find out quickly :).

i know its annoying and the internship for 4th year the pay has been cut to 50% i think isnt it, i suppose though at least in 4th year you know you will have something coming in every week.i have applyed for general nursing through mature entry on the cao but there si no way i will afford the 5000 tution fee and 2250 student contribution each year with no grant:(yes it sure is iv heard people say that this is their 3rd time applying to try & get into queens..exactly hopefully will hear soon enough hate the waiting around. I am going to apply for ulster aswell but would prefer queens would be easier for me to get home etc
