Before btap we were in the suckler discussion group for 5 years and got no payment at all. Still found benefit from it.

I contributed quiet a lot to the group actually, I know its not a money making exercise but you shouldn't be out of pocket either

To say "the group you're with would be better off if you stayed out of it" is a bit harsh considering im a young progressive farmer with a BSc Agriculture (livestock), ive worked on beef farms in USA/UK, have a sound knowledge of beef farming/ strip graze/reseed etc

I don't really care what you think but as I posted im a part time farmer and don't tell me freedom if you had 25% missing off your milk cheque this month that you'd be okay with it

A payment for product and a payment for doing something you should be doing anyway are not the same thing. By your reckoning I'm out of pocket paying the sub for the discussion group I'm in as the dairy payment is gone AFAIK. If I get something for it great if I don't it will have no impact on whether or not I'm involved with the group next year.

Selective quoting is wonderful, what I said was
If you are in the discussion group for that payment you and the group you're with would be better off if you stayed out of it.
    .

    And I stand over it.

    Stand over what you like

2 completely different worlds .. You are a full time dairy farmer... I'm taking 5 days off day job to talk cows and it's costing me... reilig is being constructive in saying they should be in the evenings.. I totally agree.

I hosted group , gave plenty and did 2 tasks I being doing anyway , next year same

If you at start of the year were told to leave the farm(your farm) be in say Dublin for 5 meetings about say dairy ... Get FRS in the 5 days to do the milking and it should be covered, yet at the end of the year the person who you spoke to ( my case dept of Ag) tells you sorry chap it's X amount and you lost money?!

Maybe you don't mind losing money but in any shape or form of life ..I don't

Plenty of cuts to suckler beef incomes already in Ireland

I agree with you Bod on one hand however maybe this will get rid of the lads doing it for money only. In our group over half have not done a farm meeting. 30% of our meetings are at Teagasc offices. Ran across the Teagasc faculitor at a night out a week ago and he has agreed that these lads have to take meeting next year. They use the excuse that it is too wet or they are caught at work etc. I think it is unfair.

Yes I miss the money as well but if it fails to be sorted out this year I think I may leave it.

Yep fair bit of shuffling in ours too... Even mention of names in a hat.. This was my first year and took visit straight away .. Better off to have it done and dusted .

I'd say the hat will come out in 2014 :-) , still think a few (1 or 2 max )won't get to have to host at all buts that's their own business .. I'm happy if I break even.. Am going to insist on more if not all evening meetings.. Like the STAP group seem to be having

Local teagasc office has 3 groups. 1 for full time farmers with all meetings during the day. The other 2 groups all meet in the evening as said earlier. It makes sense!

Our BTAP is starting in the next 2 weeks. Advisor is busy getting information for the profit monitor as none of us did it last year. Looking forward to another year at it. Hopefully the majority of the information won't be about survivng a bad summer and fodder shortage and we can get on to some stuff that will develop the farm and move it forward. Reillig did you get your payment yet

Anyone get the results of their profit monitor? I'm not with teagasc and haven't received results yet. Was under the impression we'd have them during the summer.

Lies, dam lies, statistics and then there are profit monitors

We'd our first meeting for 2014 (even if 2013), got our profit monitors (if you can believe them).
It's a pity the payment is reduced, but it's a good example of what we should be doing to improve our farm methods.
    Hopefully it'll reward later

Advisor posted it out to me about a week after I gave him the figures. Unlike Pudsey, mine didn't contain lies - advisor rang to explain how the figures were calculated and to help understand it. Found it a useful tool. Again, like everything else, you have to understand it to get benefit from it.

    That was April 2013

JDI you'll be getting your 2012 profit monitor in 2014? That's poor form!

Yes agree. However I've my own figures that I look at and I imagine they are not much different to the profit monitor.

Btap was one of the best decisions ever taken here. A couple of us are going to sit down and go through our profit monitors in depth. its a real eye opener and we should hopefully be able to find a happy medium from the results.

€825 and 25% REPS4 in account dated 30th Dec! Funny thing is at this stage it would have suited if it hadn't appeared until Jan.
