    First off

If you have SKY+ you won't be able to watch recordings when you cancel your card. You can play them back before you cancel and record them via the SCART socket.

next - just before you cancel remove the SKY card from the box and leave it out for at least three months. It's possible that it might miss the kill signal and it might have some residual functionality to see some free to air programs or free to air recordings. It won't allow you to watch pay channels or previous recordings of pay channels. YMMV , but it costs nothing to try.

What SKY box do you have ?
switch the SKY box off at the mains. Take out the card. Power it up again. Older boxes will default back to the UK channel list. Newer ones will give you just the Irish EPG with most channels missing. :(

A freesat box can be plugged in to the cable as replacement , £38 to £300 depending on whether you want HD, full PVR functionality etc.

Saorview is totally separate from Satellite, treat it as a standalone box, unless you can get UK telly in which case get a Freeview HD box.

If you have money to burn you could get a nice linux box with a USB dongle that will get Saorview, Satellite, Internet (netflix?, probably with a sneaky app that we can't talk about that bypasses geoIP) , check your email and make coffee...

The Sky boxes/cards don't need a "kill" signal. The keys expire.
