'Gay' - offensive?

The word gay can mean 'naff', or just 'crap' or 'boring' yet I know a person (he's not gay in any sense of the word) who is offended by the use of the word 'gay' with this meaning.

    He says it's homophobic.

I don't agree with this - I like using 'gay' to mean 'crap' or 'boring' and I have nothing against homosexuals.

I want to liberate the word 'gay' - can I do this without offending gays - I mean, do gays 'own' the word 'gay'?
