Can anyone recommend an alarm engineer or technician etc who could look at an existing house alarm system?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

Your best chane is to post in the alarms section in "Home and diy" in "Rec" plenty of D15 installers over there who will be only to glad to assist.

Used Altor in the past to replace a battery. Was happy with service. http://www.altor.ie/

If it's just a dead battery it's pretty easy to do a DIY replacement, did this with my own alarm last year. Just Google the alarm type and the user manual should explain it, any decent electrical supplier should have batteries. Beware that the alarm will probably trigger when you remove the control box cover!

Obviously contact a proper technician if there's a bigger problem, or if you're not confident working with equipment.
