After illness stopped me running for the last few months my goal to reach 50 in 2018 seemed lost. I did my 49th in Tralee today - lovely crowd.

But I heard there that there are multiple mid week runs around kerry for New Years.

I’ll be around Monaghan for New Years - anyone have a list of Parkrun events around New Year’s Eve/day?

there are no parkrun events on New years eve - here is a full list of events holding an event on nyd- parkrun.ie/special-events/

Nothing at all around the north end of the country. Closest would be Roscommon which is two hours away on awful roads.

    But thanks the info lads.

Check the UK site, some of the Northern Irish park runs may be on

Craigavon or Enniskillen should be doable under an hour if you're in North monaghan.

Not sure if there are any nearer.

After many years of parkrun, today was the first tine I completed the New Years Double. Many people in Griffeen this morning that made their way to Corkagh for 11am and resulted in Corkagh breaking their attendance record. A few people had also done other parkruns at 9.30 so a lot of people taking advantage of the chance to do two events on the same day.

Did my 1st double today too.
    St Annes and Fr Collins.

My first double too! Last year was so injury filled that I’m still chasing my 50th but with 2 today I’m almost there! Poolbeg and Cabinteely - too many hills

Over 300 at Bushy and Tymon this morning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,551 ✭✭✭chinguetti

437 at Father Collins, up nearly 200 from this day last year. Amazing turnout and a cracking morning/early afternoon which wouldn't be possible without our volunteers and our friends from St Anne's parkrun.

I was at Ormeau in Belfast this morning. 521 people were at it!!

Was brilliant as always. I really enjoy the double its a great way to spend NYD I was sober by the end anyway.

I came off a 24 hour shift and straight down to St.Annes, then into the car and onwards to Father Collins and had an absolute ball between them both.

What a way to start 2019 eh!. If one wasn't already hooked on Parkrun then today would have sealed that deal, everyone was out for fun. Brilliant, brilliant craic and well done & congratulations to all the volunteers who gave up their time to make it the best possible NYD double possible.

Then it was breakfast, bed and now pints & a Vindaloo later :D

Also did the double this morning - my first trip to Griffeen, followed by the lovely hills of Cabinteely :) at 11.

And finally FINALLY got to my goal of a sub-20 5k, went around Griffeen in 19:54 (according to Strava, parkrun clocked me a second faster than that), found it extremely tough but happy to do it. Only took me 129 parkruns and two road races :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,191 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Just did Griffeen. Two in 4 days is quite enough for now. :o Still, sub 29 for the first time. :P

Fair play to all of the doublers.

    Happy New Year!

2nd time doing the double (did Hartstown and Porterstown last year) and did Bushy and Tymon today - 1st time to run either of these. Really enjoyed the 2 courses. Thanks to all the volunteers, top jobs!

It's a really nice setting. One pretty big hill at the start which you do twice as it's 2 laps buts it's still nice. Completely in forest surrounded by a lake.

Double this morning, first in Listowel at 9am where I took my course pb there from 23:55 (it was pretty soft) down to 22:16 (was aiming for sub 23). Then to Tralee where my wife and I escorted our 6.5 year old around her first parkrun in 44:41. She did great but she’ll only be doing these a few times a year as I think the junior parkrun is plenty at her age. Attendance record broken in Tralee today, 350...up from 334.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,799 ✭✭✭✭Ted_YNWA

178 in Johnstown today. Big increase on the usual. A lot of tourists paid us a visit.

Newbie to parkrun won it in a time of 16:37. Fastest time in racecourse course.

Legs were still a bit tired from Saturday, plus an 8k run didn't help things. Still got around in a good time.

Busy crowd for our free tea, coffee & cakes afterwards created a good atmosphere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,678 ✭✭✭DeepBlue

Ran Inch Beach yesterday as part of a double. First time there and I'd class it as a "parkrun-everyone-should-do-at-least-once". (Although I expect I'll be back a few times).
The RD used the phrase that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication and there's something to that.
You run in a straight line for 2.5K to a marker you can't see with just the sand and waves to distract you and then turn and run for another 2.5K back to the start point which you can now no longer see.
There's no sharp turns, no runners that you have to get past slowing you down. No excuses, it's just you versus your time.

Not that I got my lazy/hungover ass out of bed but Hartstown had a record aswell. In the 160's I think

167 I think. Was really strong turnout all around country. Seemed to be a lot of new records set

Second highest turnout for Cabinteely, 250 exactly. I didn't do the double but ran one and volunteered the other.

Believe it or not next Saturday's 59th finisher will be the 100,000th finisher at Malahide parkrun since we started the event 6 years ago! It also means that a grand total of 500,000 km will have been covered down through the years! Who will be our 59th finisher???

Parkrun never ceases to amaze me. I wonder what its founders make of its success and how its changed so many lives and all it takes is a little effort and a lot of good will.

    Amazing.

It is going from strength to strength. New events popping up the whole time & not reaching a saturation point with events.

25,000 finisher will happen in Johnstown at weekend too in just under 4 years.

I've registered for my local one, and hope to encourage my 11 year old daughter to come along too, for her own fitness. We started the Couch to 5K app during the summer, but one thing and other we didn't get very far. I have previously jogged a few 10k. Would it be suitable for us to do a bit of walking/bit of jogging? Or would we be trailing miles (kms!) behind everyone?

You can do it as fast or slow as you want. There is a volunteer who will be at the back of the 'run' so no-one will be last.

Plenty of people start of with a run, walk a bit, run, walk a bit method, so you will not be alone.

Not sure where you are based, but there is also Junior Parkruns which are aimed at under 14s which are 2K. They are on Sunday mornings. There might be one close to you for your daughter.

    Well done on signing up.

Thanks. It's been on the to do list for a good while. My daughter is at the age now where she needs to be a bit more physically active. So bringing her along with me 'for moral support' will be a good incentive to keep me going and to push her a little, without her realising she's been pushed!!

I'll look into a junior one for her too. Thanks for that.

You can walk the entire 5km and no one would think of less of you. Its all about turning up and doing a 5km.

Walk, jog or run the distance is 5km and that's the important bit. Its not a race and there's no one there to judge you.

Its all positive and no negatives.

One of the volunteers will be a tail walker, their job is to bring in the last person so you'll never be left alone and the full volunteer team will be at the finish line to scan you in.

    Just do it :D

I'll likely be volunteering at Father Collins this weekend, if by chance that's your local you're free to drop me a PM and I'll run you through everything or even hook up there if you wish.

    Thanks so much.
I will load up the old C25K app again and get us both moving on that. She did really well with it when we started during the summer. Hopefully with the bright evenings on their way back I'll have her ready for her first full 5K run by April or May.

Janey, if the actual events are as welcoming and helpful as this thread then we've been missing out, big time!!

It is the fact that it is not strictly a race. People do try & beat their time or Johhny/Mick etc but no pressure on anyone. Just friendly rivalry as everyone becomes more regulars.

You will get hooked. Everyone is there to enjoy themselves.

It is international too, just wait until you are checking Parkrun locations abroad before you book a holiday. :D

Honestly I've never met a single person who didn't love Parkrun.

Don't forget to register both your names on parkrun.ie where you'll get a return email with a bar code.

Print the bar code and bring it with you otherwise you won't be counted.

Later that day (after the event) you'll get a very detailed email from your Parkrun giving your time, age grading, position, placing and a few other details. You'll also see how many participated, their names and where you're placed in that group.

Then you're hooked, you'll want to start getting some PB's and the number of Parkrun's logged etc, its brilliant craic.

Finally you'll turn into a Parkrun bore to your family and friends who you'll be pestering to joining you in Parkrun lol.. When they finally do they'll wish they'd listened to you and done it sooner :D

  • Administrators Posts: 14,396 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Big Bag of Chips

My favorite city is Krakow, I'm dying to return so this Christmas I dropped MASSIVE hints to the family that I wanted to do the Krakow Parkrun.

They were making all the right noises so I told a few people I was doing Krakow in March (my birthday), I was convinced of it... I was fecking let down, they never got the hint so now I've to pay for it myself lol.

I think from now any city breaks for me will have to include a city with a Parkrun.

Yup, Barcode and something to drink afterwards (and maybe a dry t-shirt).

Try get there a few minutes early for the briefing, you'll be ran through some of the guidelines like we don't have exclusive use of the park, be mindful of other park users, dogs to be kept on short leads etc.

Then there'll be a fun bit where announcements will be made, ie any milestone runners, Parkrun tourists (visitors from other locations), they'll all get a big cheer and welcome then you'll be sent to the start area and then its down to you to put the effort in.. You'll be met by marshals at various points who'll probably be encouraging and cheering people on too.

Then report back here and lets us know what you thought of it all :D

I've been there a while now, and only over the summer copped that I was talking to the guy who set up the first one in the Republic. The fact he's still there as RD says a lot.

@BBoC, I've seen some kids younger than your daughter (u11s have to be within arms reach) finishing with a parent, being encouraged by Ma/Da and volunteers over the line. Nice little boost of encouragement. Tip away at your daughter's pace to get a feel for the course and try it for a few weeks.

The Black Oil, yep I'll happily tip along at her pace. It's more for her than me I'm doing it, but I know once I get back the bug won't be long about setting in. I hope she catches it too!

I do not think I am exagerating when I say it is a lifechanger. I have been at parkruns for 5 years now and can honestly say that without them I would not have kept running. It becomes your normal Saturday morning. Hope you enjoy.
