Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is there anywhere to check on what new parkruns are starting up?

They send an email out every Thursday, at the end of it, it says the new ones that are starting.

How do you go about booking a spot in progression?

Email parkrun Ireland. It's booked up until next August now apparently

I still can't see the attraction at all.
Different strokes for different folks n' all that, but jeez, it's the last place I'd want to do a Parkrun.
For me it's all about being out in a nice park, feeling free!
I suppose it's like a novelty or something.
Are there any other Parkruns in Ireland like this with restricted access?

Of the Dublin parkruns, which one do we think is quickest to get to the airport from via public transport? I think maybe Poolbeg, where you can walk across the Eastlink and pick up the 747 bus from near the Point/3Arena.

Make no mistake River Valley is the closest to the Airport by road. If you own a helicopter and can get flight clearance then Poppintree. It's a bit of a shame but if there was better public transport and the western entrance to the park for Darndale that would be closer than River Valley.

For Poolbeg or Fairview or any other suggestions you have to factor in the distance to the transport and then the time for the transport. For instance the 102 bus from Malahide that will take you to the Airport takes almost an hour on a good day to get to the Airport.

The Stop for the 102 is 200m from the finish line of River Valley. The 102 from River VAlley to the Airport takes at most 15 minuts. Getting to the start is relatively simple either get a 41c from town or any bus that takes you to the Airport and get a 102. Both the 102 and 41c stop outside the park for River Valley close to the finish where we gather before making our way to the start.

I know all of this is completely useless to you as it was last Saturday but just putting it up for anyone else who needs it.

    Kind of agree on this.

I can see the interest in doing a prison event for the novelty of it, but as they say on WMN podcast whenever it come up people should only be doing them if they have something to offer. They are not there as a tourist attraction.

But I'm not entirely sure what it is that any particular individual can offer as a benefit of going to do a prison parkrun. But at the same time there is 100% a benefit to the prison parkruns in other parkrunners going and participating in their events as it shows that "normal" people go and do these runs on a weekly basis and so provides a link between the prison event and the outside world. Not meaning that there is any personal link, just that seeing that other people do these events and they exist around the country and are a great social event. There is nothing that makes person A more useful than person B though.

Didn't realise people were so mad about getting different letters for parkruns 'til I mentioned to a few friends that I was going to check out the new parkrun that had started recently near my friend's house in Germany. They went apesh*t when I told them the name - Ziegelwiese :) Up 'til now the only option was Küchenholz near Leipzig which I'd done a few times.

So yes I now have added a 'z' to my parkrun alphabet!

I'm the opposite. I've 53 parkruns done, and 52 of them have been in the same place. :pac:

You probably missed the outrage when one of the Polish events changed from beginning with a Z to a Z with some king of accent over it and messed up them getting a badge on the Chrome Extension. :D

I don't think it's just a novelty. When I first signed up there was a bit of that aspect but after being there and seeing how much the prisoners get from it and how excited they were to see and talk to new people I felt that they got more form it than I did. With that in mind, I signed up again for next August.

Anyway, when you run Dundalk every week, a prison is almost a step up :D

That is fantastic, and that you have put yourself forward to go again shows that it's not just a box ticking exercise for you. Going again I think makes you a more valuable visitor to that event.

I think we need to be very careful about the language used discussing prison parkruns that people with less knowledge of parkrun and the reasons behind the prison events existing don't view it as a novelty or box ticking exercise. Thankfully on here we can have more civilised discussions on such topics than in certain other online spaces.

I got my confirmation email confirming a place in June, and that was a month ago.

But they do get cancellations, I was offered one two weeks ago but I was coming off a night shift in work and you've to arrive at the prison an hour before the run for security checks and briefing so I couldn't take it.

I'm looking forward to it, I've only heard very positives things about it.

AFAIK, St Anne's and Father Collins parkruns have done the New Years Day Double for the past 4 years at least. Anyone on here in the know as to whether they will be doing it this year, neither have declared on the parkrun Christmas Compendium page??

Might be worth dropping both core teams an email to see what their plans are. You should find the email addresses on both parkrun sites on the website.

Cut off to decide is next Tues (17th) so they might still be mulling it over.

They announced last week that it is yet to be confirmed but Collins is planned to be at 9:30 with Anne's on later this time.

Parkruns can only go ahead on these days if there is enough volunteers willing to support on the day. That could be why they are waiting on making the call.

What is the process out of interest? Do you need council permission everytime it is not on a Saturday at 9:30?

Some people think far too deeply about these things. Wtf is a 'valuable visitor'?

I would like to run it because it would be a novelty to run around the yard of Mountjoy prison.

    What's wrong with that?

For anyone in the midlands it is possible to do a New Years day double between Mountlucas at 9:30 and Kilcock or Vicarstown at 11:00.

Both are approx 40mins drive from Mountlucas.

Also, the "Deerpark Double" is a reality!

Deerpark Forest parkrun, Virginia, Cavan at 9.30, followed by Deerpark parkrun, Carlanstown, Meath at 11am, with a 19min drive in between.

parkrun Ireland country manager Matt Shields was a guest on Free Weekly Timed podcast last week. Interesting to hear how parkrun started in Ireland and his focus on walkers and health and well-being even though he is a very fast runner himself. Well worth a listen.

Parkrun double on NYD: the best recipe to miss January through injury (if your lucky to avoid a car crash rushing between venue 1 and 2).

Depends on how fit you are really. If your max distance is 5k then trying to run 10 out of the blue isn't best idea in the world. If you are used to longer distances and pace yourself appropriately then their shouldn't be any issue.
Alot of folk jog from Anne's to Collins for this run (or vice versa) so may do 15-20k on the day.

A nice approx 4k run from Stormont to Orangefield in Belfast for anyone wanting to do similar North of the border

Does anyone here keep a record of median finish time averages for your local parkrun?
It's documented by parkrun themselves as steadily increasing over the years across the board(which they are fine with), are any local runs bucking this trend?
I do see Marlay Park despite very large numbers appears to be a couple of minutes under the national average for Ireland.
Have the Operation transformation and Parkwalk times skewed the figures that much?
Do people keep records on averages from March - December vs Jan - March to get a truer picture of the health of the nation?

UK averages and increase over time:
