Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yea I'm sure Shams were disgusted with the money they got for getting in the Europa League group stages.

What? What type of response is this? Unreal. Who has suggest this is the case?

But over the last decade or so. The english nearly dominated the champions league. In 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09, 3 english teams got to the semis.

I meant Spanish/Portuguese teams in the Europa League/UEFA Cup latter stages, going back 10 years to Porto v Celtic and Benitez/Valencia v Marseille

Oh blah if Liverpool were relegated to the conference it would be the best league in the world. Neither the champions league or Europa league are worth a ****e. They are saturating the game.

Wenger and Redknapp also think the Champions League is overrated.

They should at least change the name of the "Champions" league tbf.

    Why? Champions play in it.

So do 2nd, 3rd and 4th places from some leagues.

Champions League implies that champions partake in the competition. It doesn't say anything about being the exclusive preserve of champions. This always strikes me as the most petty of complaints. What should they call it? "The competition where champions but also lower-placed teams from big and medium sized leagues compete trophy"?

The problem with Europa League is that a lot of the teams didn't want to be in it - get rid of the Champions League dropouts and it might be better. Last season's EL was good but mostly thanks to Athletic Bilbao. I went to the Dublin final in 2011 and it was a really poor game compared to the Champions League final of the same year, so I'm not sure if I'd agree on EL being better than the CL.

Well.. the group stages aren't very interesting in either tournament, except for the occasional 'group of death' style games. And of course if your team plays in it.

There can be less champions than there is champions. There's an infinite amount of names to call it, it doesn't have to have anything to do with the league positions of the clubs involved. What's wrong with "The European Cup"?
You're just being silly with that suggestion.
Doesn't bother me too much the way it is but it is an odd name when you think about it.

The Champions League is a rather tedious ordeal as a result of 6 group games followed by 6 games over 3 knockout rounds before the final. The post-group games should be one leg. That would make it far more exciting. A Heineken Cup style points system would liven up the group stages.

Not sure how this would work, but imo this would make things easier for bigger sides.

It wouldn't make it easier for the bigger teams. 6 groups of 4 with only the winner of each group and two best second places getting into the quarter finals. It would eliminate alot of the poorer side from the group stages as there would be a reduction in the number of teams, and it would mean every group game actually mattered as appose to the predictable procession that the current group phase borefest is.

Yes, but it's less revenue for UEFA so it's a non-runner. There'll never be a situation where less games will be played in the CL, as boring and tedious as some are, they still gain massive TV audiences. If any changes are made to the CL they will be structural, nothing will be done to reduce the amount of games.

    Europa League is really good

Has anybody mentioned the 3e effect? Poor picture quality coupled with even worse commentary have a serious effect on people trying to enjoy football.

They should have kept the 2nd group phase.
