Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can you do the course in UL without doing metalwork in secondary school?
The sciences that I'm doing are biology and ag science.

    Yes you can.
Many of the other students will have it, so you'll need to keep up, but, yes, it's possible to do it with no background in 'practicals'.

Quick answer yes you can. Although it is an obvious advantage as others will be ahead of you with certain techniques or theory. Plenty people did the course when I was there and had never done Tech. Graphics however they did struggle at times. It will require a huge effort on your part.

    Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to hold at the time of enrolment the established Leaving Certificate (or an approved equivalent) with at least Grade C3 in two Higher Level subjects and Grade D3 in four Ordinary or Higher Level subjects (including Mathematics, Irish or another language and English).

In addition, applicants are required to hold at least the following in the Leaving Certificate or an approved equivalent: Grade B3 in Ordinary Level Mathematics (Grade D3 in Higher Level Mathematics also suffices) and Grade D3 at Higher Level (or Grade C3 or above at Ordinary Level) in one of the following:Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Physics with Chemistry, Engineering,Technical Drawing/Design & Communication Graphics,Technology, Construction Studies, Agricultural Science, Biology.

Students admitted to the programme are required to undergo a Garda Vetting process. The University’s Special Mathematics Examination is not applicable to this programme.

It's fine at the moment but TC currently has proposals up for review that would mean those beginning second level concurrent education degrees would have to have studied the subjects to be taught for Leaving Certificate.

They have not, as yet, ruled out implementing this for 2014 entry which would mean it would affect current 5th years.

Any ideas on when a decision will be made on this?

No. It is still in the consultation process.

    Here is the relevant documentation:

And here is the survey where you can give your opinion on the proposed changes:

I am very against this particular change as I think there are too many schools that don't offer too many subjects at LC level - so too many students will be disadvantaged. I also think those who are already socioeconomically disadvantaged will be more likely to be disadvantaged than others.
