Sounds like its a definitive no external drives supported full stop. Expect them to patch it in though

And it seems like no music or movies that aren't on disc or Sony's online services

If it can't play movies and TV shows at launch that will be enough for people to cancel pre-orders. I'm not a hardcore gamer, I wanted an all round media centre. I mean, not to be able connect an ext hard drive? Dealbreaker for me I'm afraid, really annoying to leave it so late to announce this. I don't want to get an Xbox One but I reckon stunts like this will push many people like me down that road.

Please don't anyone accuse me of fanboyism! It's a genuine criticism and I am pretty pissed off at sony at a lot of this rubbish, specifically not being able to watch TV shows, movies from an external hard drive, stream content online or listen to your own music.

I mean it's not exactly a lot to ask considering the previous gen managed it quite well. Now I get to spend the day researching xbox ones. Lovely :-(

It only says you cannot use an external HDD for expanding storage on the PS4, absolutely nothing about playback of movies/music via an external HDD.

I've just asked Shu Yoshida on twitter. I hope i get a definite answer, but i can't imagine they would restrict that basic of an ability!

Its a good thing that I am only interested in games on the platform that can best present them!

    @Yosp
Had a very good discussion w the PS4 Dev team today. We're happy & appreciative to learn so many people use and like PS3's media feature

I know they're going for primarily a gaming console, but c'mon! Hopefully they'll sort some of the restrictions out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,748 ✭✭✭rolexeagle1

I would say they will, they wont let anything slip to Xbox this time around.

It's only a minor setback as I'll be using the same monitor for both PC and PS4. So not a dealbreaker for me.

Still not confirmed that you can do any of this this on a X1 either, even their X1 TV is not coming to Europe for the foreseeable future.

Yup, been reading about xbox ones all morning! I'm a bit deflated after this, was super excited up to yesterday. Frustrating stuff, my above message was probably a bit OTT. I was just shocked

I have never been pushed by it, if I usually turn off the music in most games and just up the the dialogue volume and play my own music through my Harman Kardon Soundsticks III, and use my laptop to watch movies through my TV using a HDMI cable, but I can see how it will be a pain for some people.

Well it definitely said in the FAQ that you can install system update 1.50 via a USB stick; So that must confirm its compatible.

I'm almost 100% sure they will include MP3 + DLNA in a future update. Yosp on twitter seems very taken back by the overwhelming response by the community to have these features back.

It would look very good on their behalf if they listened to feedback and made the changes the consumers want!

    I second that Klair88!

Shu is too smart to start making the same mistakes that MS made. He has fished for what the community wants and he will supply so his legend will continue as the champion of the people!

With PS4 games being $59.99 on the NA PSN store, it will will be very cheap to buy a few digital games if you buy a US PSN card off Amazon.com, the games would work out at €43, the indie games would be even cheaper, sub €10 euro in most cases.

    Gamers are such nasty creatures...

When next ten was just announced everyone were shouting: "we want consoles and games! Not bloated **** you add to them! I want to play, not watch **** on it!"

Now we get just a glimpse of proper full on gaming console, which is quite powerful and does not support mp3 (blu Ray and DVD not even confirmed and most likely rumored) - booooooooo, where will I listen to my Britney Spears music and watch DVD porn!!! Booooooooo! Cancel cancel cancel!

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

Not really. I don't think anyone was fine with very basic features being taken away. It was all the TV services I heard people complain about, anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,150 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

You can get porn on dvds?

On another note, do Microsoft have a similar FAQ for the XBox One?

Yep, for all we know. He's sitting in some nice hotel, smiling, knowing that all the features like MP3/DLNA/external HDD are natively compatible with the PS4 but they said it wasn't on the FAQ so they could Swoop in and say "We listen to you, we know you want this, it is enabled."

I'd say these features will be patched into the PS4. At launch the PS3 had none these features. They are probably primarily focusing on the console itself and the OS at launch and for a while after. They will be collecting data about how to OS performs and any issues people experience before they start adding extra things into its functionality.

We can't expect everything at launch, just use your old system for streaming until it gets sorted. Lets just be happy that we are getting pretty amazing spec and system for €400. I paid €599 for my PS3 when it launch, it took me a whole summer of saving during college to afford it. Happy now I have a good paying full time job that and the fact that the console will be 30% cheaper then the previous one.

Lets just wait and see what happens before we all go something something....

People are still surprised that some features will be missing at launch?

The PS3 didn't even have rumble. trophies or in-game XMB menus at first. As with any new console it's a long term investment and you gotta give it time to develop over the course of a generation.

Sony are just trying to maximise subscriptions to their Music & Video services.
Hopefully the backlash will make them re-instate the DNLA services. It might take a few months to integrate though.

With the exception of rumble, these were new features to the last gen of consoles. Sony are purposefully taking features away from the PS4 which is not on.

If this is the case then Microsoft will be removing the likes of Netflix and Sky Go to make may for the X1 TV. If Shu is on the case though we will see results, he never bull****s people and has a great track record.

You could only get Knack, seeing that Drive Club is delayed.

Can we expect amazon.co.uk to follow suit?

Yeah, wouldn't mind trying that out. Have a vita and this looks good with Knack and remote play, one can play on the the PS4+tv, the other play along with you on the Vita.
