    1. Get rid of that nasty half a stone that's crept on since Christmas, starting with giving up wheat from today.

    2. Really make a go of things with my boyfriend, after the annus horribilis that was 2012.

    3. Keep writing little bits and pieces here and there, even if it's just bits of fluff.

    4. Improve and maintain my college grades, especially in September.

    5. Read more.

    6. See my friends more.

    7. Exercise, even if it's just a bit of jogging.

    8. Wait patiently for my skin to clear up.

    9. Support my dad in his next career path after a rough few months, and contribute to the family finances howsoever I can.

    1. Move flat - Done

    2. Use excess savings from last year to sort out wardrobe - Done.

    3. Complete 3 or 4 more IT certs (depends a bit on training budget in work) - One down, 2/3 to go.

    4. Volunteer more - Started, due to get trained in with www.aware.ie in a few weeks.

    5. Get more involved in the process of managing complete projects in work, rather than just doing the technical bits - Started, have a project that I'll be doing about 75% of the work on, which'll keep me busy.

    6. Add x amount to savings.

    7. Do a cookery course.

    8. Do a 200km bike event (maybe WW200 again, I'll see), at least 2 160km events and various other 100km events.

    9. Complete the Dublin Marathon.

    10. Progress more towards long term goal of setting up my own business, probably through a course or looking into the legalities around company formation.

    11. Expand group of friends and be a bit less single.

Start looking after myself more, cut out most of the crap I eat and what not

Do a course of some sorts

    Travel the country in 24hrs

Start a savings account and try get a job in what I'm good at, but that's highly unlikely

Here's how things have been going for me.

Get down to 8% bodyfat-got to 12% then tendonitis reared its ugly face. Out of gym for next few weeks which is driving me nuts! March is essentially a recovery month so hopefully will be back to where I was.

Get back to playing rugby with local club-played couple of games and really enjoying it. :)

Be more social/engaged/meet more people etc-very pleased with this. Have met loads of new people through rugby and college.

Get big boy job for after college-early days but not going too well, so easy to get discouraged with this one! :(

Be more proactive in general-kinda my main goal as I've always been mr passive, which hasn't brought me diddly squat in my life! At least I kinda know what to work on now. Its bloody hard though.

So mostly positive but after the clusterf*ck that was 2012, anythings an improvement!

    6. Socialise more.
    7. Read more sci fi books.

Seems like a good time for an update on this.
    1. Done and have already booked flights and match tickets for a Barcelona match in May.
    2. A slow start but am out 4 times a week now. Still a torture though
    3. Exams in 1 month  but did well in the CA already.
    4. Yes a new job would be better so new goal is to start applying.
    5. Hmmmmmm
    6. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
    7. Working my way through 2 trilogies.

Any more updates? Keep the motivation going

As Meat Loaf didn't say 1 out of 4 ain't bad. Though 25% is a fail. :( But can look at it this way: 25% done and not even 25% of the way through the year. :)

    Good thread OP, my top in order of importance;

    1. Grow closer to the friends I've made over the last few months, because I've made a lot
    2. Stop wasting so much time on the internet/ reading AH
    3. Start doing my reading well in advance for college assignments/exams
    4. Do a better job planning my career/ learning about other job areas
    5. Look after myself more, cook more of my own dinners etc.
    6. Find a girlfriend, I know if I have this attitude it won't happen, that's why its last even though the rewards would exceed the other 5

    Bit of an update on my part. All goals in the same order;

    1. Slowly but surely doing well in this area, we have some nights out planned, things are going well in general
    2. Stopped using boards everyday, almost completely avoid AH, still waste time on other sites though
    3. Not doing as well with keeping up on the reading as I thought I would
    4. All I have learned is that research jobs aren't as well paid, and that I could become a second level religion teacher with a BA in Sociology
    5. It varies, depending on how much college work I have to do
    6. Still single, but no pressure, it only means one is strong enough to wait for what they deserve

Finally all set up in Vancouver. At the minute I'm more concerned about getting the Irish bank accounts out of the red than I am buying a guitar, but I'll get around to that.

Regarding the fitness, work gets in the way as much as possible. Trying to get out for a jog every Sunday (although no need this weekend cause I'm gone skiing :D). Thinking about taking some parkour classes. Looks like a fun way to get fit. It also looks like a very well-rounded fitness (cardio, strength, flexability, joint mobility, hand/eye co-ordination).

    Good idea for a thread.

Get married and give ourselves and our guests a day to enjoy (47 days to go!)
Do well in my new role and earn a decent amount of commission.
Use the extra finances I'll have this year (thanks to improved tax position of a married man and recent promotion) to save and get ahead of my debt repayment schedule instead of increasing my spending.
Start a rainy day fund so the unexpected events of this year don't cause as much hassle for me as last years ones did.
Get enough money into that account so I can take my soon-to-be wife on honeymoon during the summer.
Take up some form of exercise and get out on a surfboard a lot more than the once I managed this year.

Two down (well, the second one was accomplished by my wife winning the honeymoon on Radio Nova and, since it was a skiing holiday, it's helping with the last one too: a week on the pistes has knocked a bit of the blubber off :)

So lads (& lassies who frequent here) what are your aims for 2013?

    Mine..
    1) Finish redecorating my house (again)
ONGOING... Have the back broken in it though
    2) Maintain my ongoing battle with the evil tobacco genies!
Havent had or wanted one in 3 weeks. Before that one, it was 4 weeks. still want one occasionally, but getting there.
    3) Put a few more manners on my dogs... Especially the puppy!!
    Slow SLOW progress here.
    4) Get back into running. Start off in the mornings with the mutts, work from there.
    emmmmm........ Nope. Nothing doing here
    5) Find a woman who appreciates you for who you are, and you appreciate for who she is, not just how she looks! (Even though the looks are kinda slightly important-ish!! ;) )
    Next question please :o
    6) Stop letting the ironing pile up. Little bits at a time keep it under control.
This is done!.Says he looking at a weeks worth of ironing to be done, but it was all washing from yesterday, so it doesn't count!!
    7) Keep on enjoying work. Keep asking the boss to give you more responsibility. You know you are good enough.
Getting there. Have been given sole responsibility for 4 ongoing projects, so that's good
    8) Try to work on that shyness thing.
The thought of approaching a woman without having SOME form of previous contact or something in common still causes me to break out in a cold sweat, no joy here.
    9) Save some fecking money. You haven't had a holiday in 4 years. I know you said you don't want to do the single guy on hols thing again, but, you might just have to.
Going away with a bunch of friends next weekend.. does that count?? :(

So still have to sort the plane lark out, won't be till September I'd say

Joined an archery club and that's going rather well :D

Also joined a gym and that's going rather well too, done rather well in my last assessment, also keeping up with the healthy eating and such :D

Going to be doing a revit course in may so that's gona help me big time in the future :)

The 24hrs thing is on hold for the time being

And I started a credit union account and I'm saving for a new car :)

Sort out my weight, general health.
Improve my finances - pay off some loans, reduce credit card balance.
    Spend more time with family.
Get more time to enjoy hobbies - squash, reading, movies, photography.
Take some time out over the Summer for a family break.
Concentrate on succeeding in my new job.
    Appreciate the simple things.

Weight is coming off, lost a stone, will try harder after this bank holiday weekend.

Loan Balances are reducing, need to work on credit cards soon.

Doing a lot more things with my daughter at weekends. Plenty of swimming, kids shows, nature walks. Doesn't cost much, makes her happy and me too.

Getting better at making time to get lost in a good book, a good movie and enjoying squash twice a week. Great for stress. Even bought a nice DSLR, so photography hobby is now a reality. Looking forward to long evenings and happy snapping.

Plan to take 3 to 4 weeks off when my daughter is off school in Summer. Feel very lucky to be able to do this. No foreign holiday this year, finances won't allow it, so hoping for a good Summer, it'll be great, fingers crossed.

So all going great here, very lucky.

    • Trip to London, to New York, to Dubrovnik & Plovdiv. Add to this that I will go away as much as possible and say YES to any travel opportunities that come my way. Nothing booked yet, though I did go to Edinburgh instead of London
    • Volunteer with a children's or homeless charity Not yet
    • Move to city centre to be closer to work and social life and to save money for trips. Yes!
    • Get a payrise Asked for one, not happening
    • Look into new job opportunities whether in current company or a new one Must do this more
    • Do some creative writing. Or just writing :D Hmm, not yet but doable
    • Meet someone special to share life with :)Still doing the OD thing so hopefully :D
Since we're a good bit through the year, I thought I'd check up on my list and maybe give myself a kick to start making some of these things happen

    - Play an entire season of football without sustaining an major injury
    - Keep up gym sessions throughout the football season
    - Get two or three IT certifications
    - Go on a sun holiday to get a break
    - Head over to a Liverpool game and take a few other weekend trips
    - Pay off the car loan early and start saving.

    Right, here's my update!

    1) Awesome mod is awesome :pac:

    2) Having a bit of trouble with my foot which hasn't stopped me playing any league games but I've been disrupted in my training the past 3 weeks. That said, nothing major so success

    3) I've kept to this somewhat despite a lull around May after the first round of championship

    4) Nowhere near getting certifications but I can push for them, later in the year due to work developments most likely.

    5) Had a great week in Zakynthos with my two best mates, unbelievable break!

    6) Hoping to get a 'pool game in October/November and potentially one more before Christmas

    7) Saved a good bit before the holidays but nothing knocked off the car loan, maybe at the end of August I should be able to put a few hundred towards it.

Some great posts in this thread. taxAHcruel in particular...

    So one month update...

Finances: I've done out a very simple budget in Excel and am keeping track of the cashflow a bit better. I've also cut back on things like takeaways and instead bought a fortnight's worth of shopping on Tesco and am making stuff instead. Also cutting out the random crap I buy (eg: stuff on Bargain Alerts etc) :)

Work: Only getting busier (which is a good thing) and I manage a small team which looks likely to expand. I need to start fighting for what I'm worth more - I'm rubbish at the question "so what are your salary expectations" for example and seem to always undersell myself, even though I do extra hours, short notice on-call, get stuck in with the hands-on work if needed etc and go in with the attitude that things just need to get done.
It's not just more cash though - my role is in practise more senior than the title (basically I'm responsible for everything in my area) so more recognition of that too would be nice.

Car: Assuming I get the cashflow sorted out I'm hoping to still do this later in the year

Food/Fitness: As above I've made a conscious effort to cut back on the crap. Living alone + canteen in work means that when you do get home, you're not going to bother making up a meal for one.. far easier to get a takeaway on the way home.
So to counter this I've cut out the lunch/dinner in work (not great food anyway), have something small during the day and then DO make something when I get home. Only problem is I'm a useless cook :p My mother was a chef but I think it skipped me!

I need to do something about the fitness side though as my current job basically sees me going from bed-car-desk-car-couch-bed most days :( I know joining a gym is the default answer but I don't know if it'd work for me to be honest. I seem to have no energy most of the time as it is no matter how much/little sleep I get so maybe a general once over by the GP is in order first.

    Update to the update :)

Finances: Improved in the last few months - partly because of cutting back on the random splurging and lazy man's dinners (takeaways) but also because of a significant pay rise linked to the next point

Work: Got a new direct manager a few months back who to be honest is a significant improvement on my last one, and since then I've started to get the formal recognition and support to do the enhanced job I've been doing for a while now. With that came a re-evaluation of my salary and a suitable increase :)

Car: Changed last month from a 06 2.0 TDI Passat to a 05 3.0 TDI Quattro A6 :D Fantastic machine with almost all the toys and extras. The only downside is the motor tax bill, but when broken down it works out at about €2.50 extra per day over the Passat (or the price of a coffee) and hey, I'm worth it!

Food/Fitness: I've made a conscious effort to make food at home rather than order in. I'm not a gourmet chef but can do the basics and I've cut way back on the snacks and chocolate etc as well in the last month or so.

Still find myself dozing off now and then in the evenings but that could be the long days (in the office @ 7:30) and my lack of a social life during the week (most of my friends are married/settled and living all over the country at this stage), but overall things are looking up :)

Start looking after myself more, cut out most of the crap I eat and what not - Joined a gym for six months but it burned me out, so I just go on very long walks roughly 16k every second day, and that seems to be doing the trick!

I've gotten back into the running over the last couple of weeks. Myself and the two brothers signed up for the parkrun site so have a bit of motivation. I came last by a good distance in the first run but I expected that as my endurance wouldn't have been up to it. Will be hoping to beat one of the brothers in 2 weeks time:D. The other one will probably take a couple of months to catch.

Re the social life - Did my first boards beer recently and it was alot easier than I expected. Good night was had courtesy of ODG.:)

Still applying for jobs but hasn't been easy. Have had a few interviews but no offers yet.

I've been a lazy git for the last year and a half so starting on Monday I'm getting back to the gym and stop making excuses for not going.

My second aim is hopefully not to be still single by the end of 2013.

We should try to keep this thread alive over the next 12 months and see how we all got on.

    First aim accomplished.

Failed on the second one :(

    Updates on Mine

    - Lose a little more weight
Going well, down about 10kgs on my weight back then but still a bit to go.

    - Get back playing more basketball.
Playing twice a week at the moment, a back injury slowed down by progress but getting over that now.

    - Certifications, I need to update mine and get more.
Started the degree, week 5 nearly complete.. feels both great to be doing it but sometimes I feel completely out of my depth and wonder wtf I'm doing there surrounded by all these driven and intelligent people. :o

But that's hopefully just down to my initial jitters and my when I get my first proper assignment out of the way, they will disappear

    - Finally, the most important one.. make it to a tGc beers night :D
Done n dusted and lining up beers no.2. :)

Infrequent poster but longtime reader here. Some good post's here,so I'd said I would join in..So here goes..

    1. Get divorced Anyone here that has ever tried to get divorced from
someone that doesn't want to will know how hard it is.

    2. Buy a house As soon as no.1 is done this will follow shortly afterward's.

    3. Achieve a 3RM on the following Deadlift @200kg,squat @ 150kg,bench press @ 120kg.
should have this by early Summer.

    4. Meet that special lady After a few false starts, this is a priority..!!

    5. Take charge of my life No if's or but's about this, stop going with the crowd and take the initiative..
you only get one life so use it wisely.

    6. Have more fun and meet more people Time to be more sJociable this year and make some new friend's

    7. Smile more The next time the cute blonde in Ryan's bar smiles at you,for the love of God go over to her and say hello.

I'd take 5 out of that 7 but the getting divorced is non-negotiable..

Oh and read a book a week..forgot that one..
I originally posted this on 3/2/2013.One month after splitting up with a long term girlfriend.

1.I got divorced in march.Boy that was a relief I can tell you.Huge weight lifted.

2.I bought my house 2 weeks ago. This was nearly as hard as getting divorced.
Can't describe the feeling sitting here looking around at my own house.Unbelievable..!!

3..Too much on to achieve all of this. However I did bench press 120kg for 5 reps.

4.Been seeing a lovely lady for the past while.Things are going great on that front. And she doesn't want kids, which is a huge plus.

5.This has been a big success,I started doing things on my terms and have become much more assertive. There is much more get up and go in me now.

6.Failed miserably on this one.Have been at loads of functions with my new girlfriend.I suppose apathy is the wrong word, but maybe lack of interest in other people is my failing on this. Will definitely try harder with people.

7.Again another failure.Must try harder.Although no.4 might rule this out.!

And I have read at least one book a week, although I have been slacking lately.

So I said I would take 5 out 7,well I have done that with 2 months to spare.
All in all,a very busy and productive year so far.

    A very happy man here..

-Become less single. :) - Nope
-Get fit and keep fit. Started near the end of last year but didn't last long - Was doing well until work got in the way for the last month
-Teach myself to cook - Nope
-Become more sociable by joining a class of some sort. So similar to knuckle's number 8 - Did a couple of classes, including an exercise class

    End of year results:
50%. Wonder what the odds are of achieving the last 2 by the end of the year. :)

I write this at a low point so it's a little more hollow than it would be in a more optimistic phase:

    1. Get out more and meet new people.
    2. Gain confidence in yourself as a valid human being. Lose the paranoia. (Step 1 helps this)
    3. Regime of yoga and meditation at home, twice a day (like it was a month or so ago. As you've found, once it slips, it takes ages to get it back. Momentum.)

    4. Attend yoga classes outside home, which will help as well with social life and getting out more.
    5. More yoke-fuelled night outs.
    6. This is a big one, GET BACK PLAYING FOOTBALL, 5-a-side whatever. You know how much this has been missing from your life. Will help body and mind as well.
    7. TRY acting. At least TRY it.
    8. Open yourself up to the possibility of a lady friend again. It's not too late!

    Will check back next year!

Good thread.. must remember to check this out again next year.
When I read that, I checked the thread post date XD

    =-=

    1) Back to gym, will aim for twice a week.
    2) Wake up, and get out of bed an hour before work. As opposed to wake up, shower if I've time, and drive to work to be barely on time :pac:
    3) Obtain an IT Cert, such as CompTIA Server+, etc.

    Pass my driving test.

Take up and stick to yoga.

Go on at least 1 decent holiday.

    Learn to play the guitar.

    1) Been taking lessons and test is scheduled for early 2014.

    2) Started yoga, had approx 10 sessions but couldn't get into it but glad I tried.

    3) Been to Dubrovnik, Lisbon and just spent 4 nights in Hertfordshire.

    4) Guitar was purchased but Ive not had any lessons yet, fear of failure has been holding me back I think. Gonna try and remedy that sooner rather than later.

    Hopefully I'll stick to these:

    - give my absolute best on teaching practice. Don't just try to skate by.
    - get a job.
    - cook more and eat less pizzas, especially when on teaching practice.
    - spend less time arsing around on the internet and go out and achieve something.
    - get fit(ter).
    - learn the basics about money, taxes and all that over the summer, just in case I get that job in September.
    - start saving.

    The results:

    - gave it my all. I put in 100 hour weeks sometimes and for a three day stretch I got an average of four hours sleep. Not advisable. That leads onto my next point...

    - having put in the work over those three days, I got the job. I love it. Couldn't be happier. Crazy work load but I'm being paid.

    - I haven't had a frozen pizza in the last 6 months. I cook every day and have now become addicted to frozen veg. Green beans are amazing. I have porridge every morning. I've lost about a stone in the last few months from that alone

    - I haven't managed this. I don't have the time to. I'm going to have to set a period out each day whereby I can just sit back and read a few pages.

    - I still find I'm knocking about on Facebook and Boards waiting for something interesting to happen. Getting a smartphone hasn't helped this at all.

    - I joined a gym and went down with my housemate once. It was great and I could feel the effects of the workout. I never went back. I have loads of work to do when I come home but I'm just finding excuses really.

    - I still know nothing about money, and possibly never will :pac:

    - I was on emergency tax at the start and didn't have enough to save. My savings have come through though in the form of the emergency tax. I'll have to see how much is left over after Christmas. I'm hoping I can put away about £1,000.

Oh, I've been going out with an amazing girl for the past five months. She's incredible. She was in Australia this time last year and I never really thought I'd see her again never mind go out with her.

2013 was the best year of my life. Hopefully 2014 is just as good.

Here're my goals for 2013. I tried to keep them reasonable.
    • To expand my group of friends.
    • To, by the end of the year,
      1. be able to perform both the front splits, on both sides, and the box splits; Achieved via a committment to stretch a minimum of once a day, five days a week.
      2. be able to perform a free standing hand stand, ten hand stand push ups, a hand spring, a no handed cart wheel and a one handed back roll.
      3. be able to play a minimum of twenty four songs on my guitar, and twelve on my Ukulele.
      4. have completed my learning from books one to four of 'Japanese from Zero'.
      5. have gone surfing and snowboarding a minimum of four times.

    My results

I reconnected with some old friends and made some new friends from being more social in the martial arts clubs I frequent. This trend I shall be continuing as I really need to expand my social circle. Meeting up with some people tonight who were my main friends in college, but who I haven't spoken to in two years, so lets see how that goes.

    1) This was going on track until march, when after my routine warm up, at the very first small stretch, I felt something in my hip pop, a shooting pain went up my thight and I dropped to the floor. So I had to take the next few month off to allow that to heal. I started light stretching again in October and can now kick to the head again, so I'm ready to start back in to this.

2a) Hand stand, I can hold it for about 90 seconds.
2b) Hand stand push ups, I managed two. Currenty at 15 of the 20 pull up challenge I started to try build up my shoulder muscles to help this.
2c)Hand spring, yep, with the use of a gymnastics ball - this was not something I got to practice a lot.
2d)Not yet, I've perfected a one handed front and sidewards cartwheel.
2e)Yep, and I can do a no handed back roll, and a no handed side roll too now.

    3) My committment to my martial arts ate up the time for playing my guitar. Though on the last few weeks I've picked up again and have gotten through six songs. I gave up on the Ukulele.

    4) I got through book one. Which was a lot harder than I thought. It was the numerous counting methods that killed my progress.

    5) I went to Sea Sessions with the intention of surfing at it, which I'd done last year. There were no waves. I didn't go snowboarding as I couldn't get a pair of hardshell crashpants. Dainese have just started manufacturing them again in the last two months of so.

So, some completed, some not. I was hindered in some by the fact I had to spend a good bit of my free time doing physio exercises to correct a knee injury, and also I was reliant on busses for the first three quarters of the year due to bike problems, so that ate up some of my free time too.

I've every intention of continuing these into 2014 with the intention of completion.

I approve muchly :pac: Honestly, though, you won't regret it :)

    My aims:

    - progress professionally
    - revisit my marathon ambitions. I did a half last year and would like to build on that.
    - become a morning runner. It appeals so much to me, but I am not a morning person. I want to be.
    - develop a more regulated yoga practice. I need to push myself more in it, instead of always doing my favourites.
    - save more
    Ooh, interesting to revisit these!
    - progress professionally. Check. Moved to a more senior, permanent role in May, after years of long-term contracts. Very challenging, but I'm learning a lot and discovering that I know quite a bit, too.
    - revisit my marathon ambitions. Epic fail. Still at half marathons. Becoming much more comfortable with the 10+ mile distances.
    - become a morning runner. Also a fail. Falling in love with twilight running didn't help here, either :pac: But I love running in the twilight and watching the colours in the sky change. Very uplifting after a long day.
    - develop a more regulated yoga practice. Check. Hello, pigeon pose!
    - save more. Hmmm. I'd say 50-50 here. Too much fun was had!

Not a bad year in all :)
