Moving to Cork

    Hello,

I am a 21-year-old Canadian moving to Ireland in June. I've never left the country so this is my first travel experience.

After talking to a few people, I will be moving to Cork. My best friend will be doing an international exchange to UCC so we will move in together when she does so.

I'm hoping for information about good places to live and work in Cork, local spots I should check out, and anything you think I should know!

    Anything would help, thanks!

First of all you must realise that there are at least five different types of English spoken in Cork City and County and whether you like it or not your Canadian English accent will now become Corkriefied. What this will sound like I dont know.
One sign of going native is answering a question with a question. Also if someone ask you if you did a particular task you answer back saying, in a sarcastic tone, I did ya. This means No.
Apart from these minor linguistic issues details you should be fine, UCC is a great college .Cork city people are very nice. It is not a big city so you will get to know your way around quickly. Public transport around the city is ok. Accommodation around the College Rd O Donovans road, Bishopstown would be the main student areas. Employment is in short supply depending on the type of work you do. IT/Pharmaceutics would be the best bet

I have no problem with being Corkiefied as you put it. My friends already tease me about coming back with an accent.

    Thanks for the advice!

Best of luck with the move! You might get more responses if you post in the Cork City or UCC forums too. They tend to be busier.

You will be fine here. Its a small city with a surprisingly large amount of nightlife/shopping/sights etc for its size.
There are plenty of other foriegn students in the city notably Spanish, French and Japanese and from those I knew during my younger days they all loved the place.

Places to check out on day/weekend trips nearby include:
    Kinsale
    Clonakilty
    Cobh and Fota
    Killarney
    Dingle
    Midleton
and of course the cities of...
    Limerick
    Galway
    Waterford
    Dublin
    Kilkenny

If ye wanted to take a trip further off heres a list of the destinations served by the local airport

I'm not actually going to UCC, it's my friend who is but we'll be moving it together after a few months of me being there.

I'm not yet sure of the geographical size of Cork, but is it far to get from one end of the county to the other? I will likely be biking and taking the bus.

    The county or the city?
The county would take a few hours to drive on an east west axis though thats partly due to the road sysem being poor in certain parts.
The county has about a half million people with around half of that living in the city, its suburbs and sattelite towns.

If you were moving to Cork you wouldnt be travelling about the county by bike but the city is very manageable considering you would be only really going around the area you choose to live in and to and fro from the city centre (unless you end up working way off from where you live).

You are a Google Maps / Yahoo! Maps / Microsoft Bing URL away from seeing how big or small Cork or anything else in the world for that matter is. Really, it is not _that_ difficult.
