Utv broadband throttling

WTF is wrong with using bittorrent? There are tons of legitimate uses.

Edit: did they just mean using peer to peer? Do UTV now now allow you to download WoW without throttling you, which uses p2p for example.

Legitimate users. I would say 99.5% of bit torrentees are not swapping holiday photos.

At the end of the day 1000s of users maxing out 750kbps over several hours on an evening is going to have a detrimental effect on the quality of you're Internet. Why sit here staring at bbc iplayer loading screen because Dave is downloading the whole series 1,2,3,4,5,6 of dexter? He pays the very same as me for Internet yet I am waiting and waiting night after night while he downloads 3 years worth of content in 1 month. How do we control it? Ah, let him do it while I'm in bed. Genius. And if he complains about it then good luck to him.

I haven't used bittorrent in over 2 months. If I need to download anything I download during the day. Still getting horrendous speeds in the evening. If I stream YouTube or Netflix it's fuzzy as it compensates for low bandwidth. Gets 6.5mb up to around 8pm and 0.5-1.0mbps there after. Logged a complaint and rang numerous times but they said there's nothing wrong with my line, so I've given up at this stage.

I just download what I need during the day to watch during the evening. It takes the spontaneity out of surfing in the evening but that's it. It just maddens me to be putting up with this type of broadband in 2013.

AntiRip, have u tried removing the Adsl pots filter and plugging modem straight into telephone socket? That's what I did to fix the very thing you are having issues with.

I will test this out this evening. Only thing is u can't use the phone if it solves it? Why doesn't this effect speeds during the day? Is it the extra noise on the line in the evenings maybe

Well, if u have two lines, I have a socket in the hall and one in the living room. Place the filter on the phone in the living room and then modem straight in at the hall. Depends how you're set up I suppose, any monitored alarms will need a filter as well. I don't know why the evenings are bad, it's weird alright. The min I took the filter away I was fast.

I tried your suggestion but unfortunately it didn't work. The drop in speed is always around the same time 8.30pm to just after midnight when it shoots up from 0.8mbps to 6.5mbps.

I noticed too that my router is actually down a bedroom and the socket is in the sitting room. There's a reel of RJ11 (15m) connected from router to the socket. This one to be precise --http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/catalogId/14551/partNumber/5521704.htm

There's alot of cable still in the reel. Could this be affecting the speeds in the evenings anyone thing? Is there a limit (<1m) that the phone cable should be from the router to socket?

That's a shame. The shorter the better I suppose. I have about 12cm.

I was thinking. Record your Internet connection speeds. One every 2 hours for 2/3 weeks. Ring utv and complain, get the operators name and email address and email all the results. Complain that if you do not see an improvement e.g, the maximum best result you get often within 3 working days then state that you will seek advise on cancelling your contract, without being penalised, due to using a product that does not work as intended. It might be useful, if you are friendly with your neighbours, for them to provide a few night time speed tests to show that it's only you. I hope u get sorted, I'd rather have a working Internet over a TV any day of the week.

I'm with them about 2 and half years so not in contract. I'm also out in the sticks so my neighbours either don't have Internet or have wireless bb such as PermaNet. You're right about the TV and the Internet :)

Ditch them ASAP they are a horrible company to have as your Broadband provider . I have just switched over to Sky because I hated UTV that much . I know Sky are having a few problems at the minute but anything is better then UTV .
I got sent a letter by them before stating I was due an upgrade from 3mb to 8mb . But it actually took me 3 phone calls for them to give me the new speeed they told me they would give me . I then rang them about 6 months ago because work was being done on the cables around my area because my neighbour who is with Eircom informed them that the line might not work too well for a period of 2 weeks while they carried out the upgrade . When it was done Eircom upgraded them to a 24mb service so I decided to ring up UTV and ask them could they bump up my speed and they told me yes if I signed a new contract . I mean that is lousy by them I had them for 3 years but I have finally gotten fed up with them . I only signed up with them 3 years ago because they could offer me the highest bandwidth usage in my area .
I was with Sky yesterday in Dundalk and the sales man really knew his stuff . He was very upfront because he did a few tests on my line throughout day . I had to wait for somebody to come home to get me an account number . He even showed me alot of previous line tests from other lines he did over the last month and I had the fastest line he tested that month . He also gave me a phone number for his mobile and for the stand too and told me any problems ring him and it will be sorted or he will guide me through cancelling the contract .

Sorry for the long winded post but switch from UTV ASAP .

You got stupid answers because the question is stupid. The simple answer is to change

There is no such thing as a stupid question. If you don't know the answer its a valid question. But there are plenty of examples of stupid, unhelpful and ignorant answers from people who know it all

There have been some recent capacity issues on the Eircom network that have been affecting download speeds.

This issue has now been resolved and service should be dramatically better.

If any UTV Connect customers have any further issues please contact our dedicated local support team on 1890 926 111.

Are you categorically stating that this has been Eircom's fault?

If so why hasn't boards been inundated with complaints from other ISP dsl customers?

It has long been a matter of reflex for UTV to blame Eircom for everything.

I once had a UTV CSR blame Eircom for a billing error!

You are right on this one Dub45. They are always blaming eircom. They would be better of saying it was a fault on one of there computers. But they should have the problem solved soon. Blaming eircom Is Passing the buck a bit. But at least they have come on boards and are starting to talk to us.

They're very quick to blame eircom for things that in all likelihood have anything to do with eircom.

It's quite unfair to be honest as the eircom core NGN network's pretty rock solid and has huge capacity. If there was an issue it would impact eircom customers and lots of other ISPs too.

There are some very small exchanges which have capacity issues, but they are across all DSL providers using them, not just UTV.

If your line's not syncing to the DSLAM (exchange) correctly, then it's an eircom fault on the local access network. However, speed issues that very during the day are almost always down to contention and lack of capacity on the ISP's own network.

A lot of DSL providers don't own any of their own infrastructure and purchase wholesale services and capacity on national fibre networks from other companies that provide wholesale products including voice services, national connectivity over their fibre networks, DSLAM local access products etc etc.

Those wholesalers include Eircom, BT Ireland and a couple of other major operators like ESB Telecoms, UPC, Vodafone/CWW Ireland, and a few others too, they're not all huge companies there are small specialists out there too.

They also purchase capacity on international fibre links to provide onwards connectivity to the Internet outside of Ireland.

Mostly, where there are ongoing problems with speed / peak time capacity it's because the ISP has insufficient capacity purchased.

It's a bit like saying "OMG We've run out of milk due to Tesco" rather than "oops I didn't go to Tesco and buy milk"

A lot of people make the mistake of assuming that these companies are just 'reselling' eircom's DSL service. That isn't really the case at all. They are using eircom's access networks to reach your home, but they build up their own core networks by either using their own equipment or renting space on other networks.

My UTV Connection has being turbo for a good few weeks now. Removing the Adsl pots filter helped as well. If it stays like this then its going to be the best service I have had in Ireland in 10 years.

I'm totally opposite :). Took filter off and connected modem straight into socket. Tried another modem, changed the rj11 cable with shorter cable and still bad. It was the worst yet last night. 0.2mbps download. Cancelled netflix last month, now I can't watch YouTube after 7pm. I've noticed the congestion is getting earlier in the evening also. I'm afraid to move and go into contract if it's the exchange that's congested it doesn't matter who I'm with.

Me too. The other thing I have only just realised is that if we charge 'any' laptops at home it knocks the internet off completely via the homeplugs. I have yet to try wifi while we charge.
