Santa brought two R4 card for my youngest kids who both have Nintende DSLite's.
I haven't used R4 cards before so followed the instructions, downloaded and unzipped the kernel, copied it to the memory card, also copied a few games across and stuck the memory card in the R4 card.
Slotted it into the DSLite, started it up and when the icon for the game appeared ont he bottom screen I clicked on the "A" button.
With both consoles the screen just goes black and nothing happens.
Quite frankly I am at a loss what to do.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

There are lots of R4 clones out there. You need the exact kernel for your card.
    What make is it?

Dowloaded the kernel from their website: http://r4ids.com/index.php/en/r4i-gold-download

Did you update the DS?? There was a Nintendo update just before christmas that stopped most cards from working, some have come up with fixes others haven't yet..

Downloaded that kernel and it seems to be the right one.
