    Got back on Sat night,

    Wow, what a fabulous golf course,

    The hole lay out is superb, they way they have used the dunnes and natural contours. It's a severe test of every aspect of your game.

    We had northerly gales and wicked showers on day 1 and day 2 but it was nice and bright for day 3. This was reflected in the scoring (23pts, 21pts and 33pts - off 5)

    Probabaly the best course I've ever played, close call with European Club

    Can't wait to get back up there again and tackle the monster :)

    Oh dear.

    Founded in 1918 and remained a nine-hole course until 1974, when the late great Eddie Hackett extended Enniscrone to an 18-hole championship course for a modest fee. Along with local volunteers they managed to transform the course for the ridiculously small sum of £5,000. The new layout was considered suitable to stage the Irish Close Championship in 1993, the Irish Women's Close Championship in 1997. The West of Ireland Amateur Open Championship was staged here in 1997, 1998 and 1999. Enniscrone was the venue of the Irish Youths' Championship in 2001, won by Mark Ryan of Grange.

    I am member in Enniscrone and can vouch for many of the comments made ...you have to play it a number of times to learn what shots to play...and depending on the wind direction the shot selections can change drastically from previous rounds.

    Just a clarification of some points being discussed. Kevin Markham's books are an excellent source of info regarding the links (and parkland) courses and I would advise everyone read his latest "Hooked"..

    Re the West of Ireland championships...Enniscrone hosted it in 1997, 1998 and 1999 on the old course (the new one opened in 2001).
    Enniscrone hosted the Championship because Rosses Point (County Sligo) at the time underwent a major greens restructuring programme.
    In 1997 Jody Fanagan , Milltown beat Brian O'Melia, Newlands 3/2;
    In 1998 Noel Fox, Portmarnock beat Pat Lyons Cork 2/1;
    and in 1999 Miko Illonen, Finland beat Rory Leonard Banbridge 4/2.

    All of the above I'm sure you will agree could play golf!

    Miko went on to win the British Amateur Championship in 2000, the year after he won the West of Ireland in Enniscrone, and turned pro in 2001.
    He has won twice on the professional tour (The Indonesian Open and the Scandanavian Masters) and still plays on tour.

    Enniscrone also hosted the Irish Close Champioships in 1993 (Eddie Power was the winner)and recently in 2009 (when Pat Murray was a very popular winner having played in the Close there in 1993).

    The key to playing Enniscrone is to play to as far as you can see...don't take risks!! The old saying "Risk & Reward" changes in Enniscrone to "Risk AND RELOAD"

    The beauty of the links courses is that they are all unique, so no two are the same and comparisons are difficult...wind and terrain are your challenge and so just enjoy!

    Braka summed it up perfectly above - "play to as far as you can see". That's the key to scoring at Enniscrone. Have to get up this year. One of my top 4 favourite courses.
