A 50km route which loops around the strawberry beds and knockmaroon hill a couple of times would probably have a fair amount of net climbing. Not far from Finglas either.

There is an absolute wealth of climbs all over ncd. Go North from Finglas towards the Dublin Meath border. I did a 45k spin the other day with 900 metres of climbing. That's twice what a 67k spin from Lusk to howth with two climbs of howth included.

Make your way to this junction.

Cycle to the top. Then come back down again. Repeat.

In fact, just follow the route here: https://sites.google.com/site/swordscc/touring-page/swordscc-sportive
Our very nice club president created that route in order to send us over almost every available steep bit of road on our regular riding routes. We love him for it. As you can see, he sends us around in circles just to make sure that we don't miss out on any nice parts.

I've just noticed that the route looks like a dinosaur.

i think what people are saying is that you should cycle on any road that leads to bellewstown.

I believe Howth Head is the only climb I could practice on without going to Wicklow
If you wish to avoid going to Wicklow but get a feel for the Wicklow mountains, you could do that by staying on the Dublin side.

Head across town via Harold's Cross and Terenure to Rathfarnham. Turn right at the Yellow House Pub and straight through the next roundabout. Then turn left just after the HSE Centre. This will bring you onto the R115 - and the pleasures of Stocking Lane.

Follow Stocking Lane up to the viewing point at Killakee and then take the next left. This will bring you across to the Tribadden Mountain Road with more climbing before heading downhill into Glencullen, Kiltiernan and Stepaside and a sprint home via Dundrum.

Wicklow-like climbs without going to Wicklow!

    Hey Lusk,

NCD? Could you tell me what that is? I cycled to Ashbourne the other day across the border, using Endomondo tells me that the total ascent climb was 30m.. Where is the 900m section?

    Thanks

NCD = North County Dublin. 900m climbing in total rather than one particular climb.

if only there was a 900m climb in ncd. that would be heaven.

  • Registered Users Posts: 118 ✭✭leecurlywurly

ncd - shoulda guessed that really ha. My excuse is, I'm new to Dublin :D

Plenty routes on here that is near Ashbourne, a stopover for a cuppa before heading back home!

Any thoughts on apps for Cycling? I use Endomondo Pro but it's not particularly good for showing the climbs..

    Thanks

Some climbs to look out for in NCD are the one from the Skerries road to Balbriggan up towards Ardgillan castle. The Nags Head off the R132 and the Man O war climb which is south of the nags head. The road is nicely surfaced here

    +1.

This is simply the best one out there for seeing routes and is great for comparing yourself to others. A fine motivational tool.

"Oh, such and such did that climb in x mins. I must take a spin out there on the bike and check it out."
