Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Spraying off grass in a young beech hedge

    How ye folks!

I have a young beech hedge that i planted only 2 years ago.
Really struggling in the summer time to keep the grass down from choking the hedge plants.

Anyway i was wondering if it is possible to spray off the grass at the butt without damaging the hedge at this time of the year.

The fact that the leaves are all gone, is there any risk of the plants absorbing any of the spray in any way and stunting growth?

    Thanks

I have sprayed a similar situation and put a hood over the spray nozle .but we eventually bit the bullet and scrubbed out al the undergrowth and then put down a bed of bark , the hedge came on in leaps and bounds

Yes you can do it now or even February, depending on weather conditions

I would pull the tallest grass out first as this will be quick and easy and will allow you to see what your doing.

Use a CONTACT Weedkiller like round up or Rambo as these only kill the plants by entering the green foliage. Make sure that there are no new buds opening up first.

There is a herbicide called Fusillade which is used to control grass weeds in root crops and vegetables. It is sprayed overall on the crop but only kills the grass and can be safely be used on shrubs at any time. It is more expensive than Roundup but people tend to use way too much Roundup anyway

    HI,

Roundup or Gallup would be fine for what you require (Gallup is cheaper than roundup) as long as you don't get it on the green growth of the hedge (woody stems is fine)

There is also another Herbicide called Pistol which contains two ingredients, one is the same as Roundup et al but also another that prevents weed seeds emergin, so is supposed to be good for up to six months.

Like others have said pulling up the bigger clumps of grass first is a good idea but not essential.

    All the best.

    M.
