Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. ooh, ultrasonic bath - noice !

Tell us about the one you have and what fluid you put in it. I bought a mickey mouse one a while ago and it's useless. Has yours a heating function ? And ever since they banned Freon it's even more useless!

What paint do you put on the calipers btw ? - I have a set of 3 Suzuki ones to do in a while as well.

Decent quality unit. 3 litres iirc. This one doesn't heat but a top up with hot water to keep it at 50c will see you good.
I use water vinegar and soap, works well.

Just finished with the badly krud infested rear master. Hard deposit of dried brake fluid and ingrained dirt galore:)

Twenty mins later you have this. All very shiny yada yada but crucially the microscopic return port is now immaculate. For carbs or injectors or anything with hard to get at bits this is a winner.
Get one you will love it and use the hell out of it.

Paint for the caliper was aerosol etch prime, old formula fast black gloss and two pack lacquer.

The grease I linked is a great all round grease and does most jobs on a bike.

Exactly, it's not the stuff we were talking about.

    What's different about it?
    Genuine question.
What does it do that the silkolene wont?

General purpose grease, silicone grease or copper grease can't go anywhere near brake seals, rubber boots etc. as they will damage them.

Red rubber grease is a special purpose grease, compatible with brake seals and fluid, vegetable based.

You'd put general purpose grease on your brakes?
Where did you get that from?
It's red rubber grease I use.

Can't check the eBay link in work.

Had a look at it last night and a tub of general purpose grease came up?

I wouldn't use RRG for jobs which need general purpose grease, it doesn't lubricate on metal to metal as well as GP grease.

Silkolene does a great job seals, bearings, axles, swingarms etc.
And is perfectly fine to use on all.
No reason not to use it.

I got a big tube of it a few years ago for a car I was working on, from a company in Cork.

I have enough now to see out the entire Internal Combustion Age methinks :pac:

I got a 500g tub of RRG not that long ago from Clane Motor Factors. It's not that hard to find, I'd go as far as saying it's easier to find here than 20W50 oil for the car. :pac:

    Nice job!!
That "special grease" is probably a silicone grease, yeah???

I know I've gotten silicone grease with sliding pin/boot kits before.

As far as I know it's NOT silicone, and afaik you can't (or shouldn't) use silicone on natural rubber components. Seeing as this is brakes, I'm going to default to using something specifically rated for brake component use.

I think silicone ( or at least I thought) worked ok with rubber.
It mightn't mix too well with brake fluid though.

Despite being meticulous in my measurements I somehow ended up with a 6mm gap up top lol. Still do not understand how. Its as if the process of peeling off the very adhesive backing of the gel pad somehow stretched and then it rebounded back 6mm shorter!? Mad Ted.
Plugged the gap with a 6mm piece of foam cut to shape and I'll sand it flush once the spray adhesive goes off properly tomo.
The tricky bit kicks off then tailoring a 3mm thick closed cell foam smoothing layer over the whole saddle before fitting the new cover.

Do you have to drill into the fender to apply push rivets?

Anytime I fit an extender I Tiger Seal it on.

You have a choice to fix in place with really strong 3m adhesive patches that need 12hr to cure or four rivets with a 4mm drill piece. I did both for maximum strength and less of a chance dropping off. Did a reasonable job making it nice and tidy tbh......

Fender is made by Puig and distributed by Pyramid for some reason!

    Dent, a sizeable enough one.

    IMG-20191204-192426.jpg
    20 quid chinesium kit.

    IMG-20191204-184314.jpg
Use the hot glue gun to stick the wee pucks

    IMG-20191204-190127.jpg
    And slide hammer em out.

    IMG-20191204-191824.jpg
Took the major dent out. Now left with the central dip.

    IMG-20191204-215313.jpg
Used a fair few chasing small dips and used a small nylon hammer to lower any raised peaks. Quite fun actully :)

    IMG-20191204-215150.jpg
    Barely a ripple left.
Now I can match the paint and fill in the chips and cut them back.

Ah yea, tis not perfect like but what was a noticeable dent before you now but you have to look for it now. Tbh all I wanted and expected out of it tops was the fifth pic down, to pull the debth out of it but I bettered that considerably so chuffed.
Isopropyl alcohol and thee missus's hair dryer a help.

Bring me yer boring can and we have a crack off it!

Cans have seen some action. Are the headers a big draw for you and can your mint cans go on them?

    No worries;)
Couple tips I learnt Mak... clean the puck, glue stick and surface with Isopropyl or brake cleaner and preheat it and the surface.
When applying the glue to the puck cover the mating surface entirely with about 5mm or so thickness of glue.
Don't press it on hard enough to bottom it out against the panel or it pops off first strike of the hammer. Let it set for 10mins.
You have to be perfectly at right angles to the puck orientation when hammering or... she pops off.
Use as big as possible a puck where feasible, especially at the start when removing the initial debth to the dent.
Drink lots of beer whilst doing this and I betcha your neighbours ask "can you do that to my car?!":)

    The whole system even bigger.
    I've only a single akra.
    It's all the one now.
I contacted the seller and he said someone in Slovakia is taking them.

And eBay is only the tip of the iceberg for me.

These beautiful Akra cans(for a different bike) have popped up on an Italian website.

This is gonna sound like heresy but if I were you I'd get something other than akra Blade. Everyone has them (no denying for good reason!) but I no longer give a bike with them a second glance, they're kinda ubiquitous.

    Yep heresy.
I'd like to know where you saw the same Akras as the ones sold last night?
Or better again find me another set for a gen 1 Mille/Tuono.

Yesterday installed an SW-Motech DIN socket (with 1.6m wiring harness, battery terminals and fuse for 20 euro from motorcycleshop.ie - bargain!) for running my tyre pump and the occasional trickle charge. (Although the SV doesn't really need charging, the Triumph's charging system was always a bit marginal even though the bike was used 5 days a week every week.)

    497164.jpg

    497165.jpg

Today I installed Oxford LED front indicators (and resistors) in parallel with the completely shyte flush mounted LED indicators this bike came with.

    497166.jpg

Rear ones will take a while longer as the wiring loom has been butchered when a previous eejit put the stupid tail tidy on, and I managed to snap the stem off one of the indicators by overtorquing it by not very much :( some epoxy should render it serviceable.

That's some bird sh!t on the SV logo btw :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,564 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

    Yup

Takes balls of steel to drill into virgin fairing :pac:

Had to dremel off a good bit of the yoke behind it as well, fcukin' used up about five cutting discs to cut off not very much plastic and was lucky to not lose an eye when the fcukers disintegrated multiple times. :)

Plastic melts as you cut and grips the disc most likely. Safety squints engaged:)
So two sets of indys.... Is it a safety visibility buzz for commuting, will one set be left on as running lights kinda dealio?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,564 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Would have ditched the old ones but then there'd be a big ugly hole (much too big to mount the new ones in)

So if they were staying put I might as well leave them wired up in parallel, LEDs are only a couple of watts after all.

The old ones were fine from the side, but almost invisible from the front, not good. Also used to flash way too fast as there were no resistors.
