Buying a house with some land

    A question for those of a rural background.
    I often see homes for sale with a few acres included and wonder whats the advantage of the land to your average non farming Joe.

    Not buying yet but as im looking at somewhat rural houses they will generally be either a detached house with up to an acre of land or a detached house with up to 10 acres.
    In the former case what do you do with all that land?
    How much do farmers pay to rent land and is it worth it for 2 or 3 acres?
    I can imagine if its somewhere thats not going to get planning permision to sell off as a site and your too busy to be planting vegetables its of no use and will cost you time and money to mantain?
    Im not sure is the 6 acres coming with a house a definate positive.

    Seclusion, nice landscaped garden, space for children to run around.

    From a monetary perspective its probably worth very little to you, its unlikely such land will get planning permission so its just a nice outdoor space for you.

    It is a big garden essentially.

    It could be that the whole plot was a small farm once that was inherited or bought by someone who built a house on it.

    You won't be able to retire on the rent you get - depending on lots of variables it might pay for your sky subscription.
