win7 backup question.

    When doing a backup to an external usb drive what do I select?

    I currently have it set to backup my whole 'C' drive.

    When I run a fresh install of window 7 and restore from this backup am I inviting the same lagging performance problems I currently have with my 3year old win7 install?

    Should I just individually select folder like photos, music, downloads etc that I wish to keep?

    I have a list of all programs currently installed for use with my clean install.

    I appreciate any help.
