According to several reports regarding health and safety in the blackrock/salthill area the diving platform has been deemed structurally unsound due to the compilation of accidents and deaths caused. In 2006 Eoin and Louise Murphy newlyweds from the surrounding area spent their brief honeymoon in a local hotel. The couple jumped from the platform during early afternoon and soon after rushed to the hospital admitting Louise to intensive care, as she was suffering a spinal injury contracted during the fall. The next day the entire city grieved as she had past away.

Every year accidents and deaths occur typically involving young people who mis-gage the distance or get caught by the current. There have been 4 accidental deaths and one purposeful death. The purposeful death reports can be found in the local paper records regarding a fight that took place on the platform in 2001 ending in the death of young William O'Neil age 17 who was allegedly pushed from the platform on to the rocks below.

The link above shows an article confirming the unsound nature of the platform and the steps taken to remove the hazards.

I dont recall deaths and accidents every year at Blackrock and there is no mention of deaths in the link, they only say it needs a comoplete overhaul and paint

What a first post James. When you think about it they're must be close to a million visits to the Blackrock diving and swimming area every year. People love it. It's great fun!! It's a big attraction for Galway and an amazing facility for the people of Galway. Any death is tragic, yes but the lack of care taken by a few (in this case 5 people in the last 12 years or so) doesn't mean everyone else should suffer.
That article you are quoting is dated May 2011

    What a ludacris post.

The article linked doesn't mention any deaths and is over a year and a half old.

I live in salthill and frequent blackrock regularly and i never hear of any accidents or deaths, certainly not yearly. As for getting caught in current, what has that got to do with the tower? Is there even a strong current? I swim that area regularly and i've never felt pulled by anything.

Thousands of people jump off that tower every year and have done for decades. Accidents will happen and fatal accidents are tragic but it's no reason to dismantle the tower,

A few people died on the roads last year, should we shut them down too?

What odds another brand new account chiming on on this thread?

It's not the first time someone's come onto boards "campaigning" against the diving board. That's a two year article about some remedial works that were completed during a winter closure of the area over a year ago. Get over yourself.

    Old link.

Link doesn't match the substance of the op.

OP blames natural hazards like currents (?) and rocks and somehow suggests that this means the structure is unsound.

Only conclusion possible is that the OP doesn't think people should jump into the sea or swim in it.

    long story short.

If you don't know the tide level, don't jump in.

In other news, crossing the road can also be dangerous

There are plenty of notices down at Blackrock warning of the dangers and tides etc... I always ask for local info before jumping off anywhere into the water, why shouldn't anyone else?

MODS - OP original post is completely unsubstantiated and is not supported by the link to the www.galwaynews.ie article. Where are these "several reports regarding health and safety"?
    Please shut this down.

You would think that if "the entire city grieved", then googling ""Louise Murphy" 2006 salthill " would come up some some results relating to the event.

Clearly it's a conspiracy by the Salthill tourism mafia to cover up any accident. The OP must have been one of the few witnesses who didn't have their memory erased afterwards. The black helicopters are circling his house as we speak.

what a strange thread. Id like links to the reports. Any deaths/injuries involving the sea are covered by the Maritime Casualty Investigation Board (mcbi.ie). I check the reports often, and never came across any.

For the amount of use the area gets, all year around, you'd expect one or two injuries, possibly a death, but cant say i've ever heard of any problems there.

The linked article doesn't bring up anything about the tower being dangerous, just that it needs a revamp because it's old.
"Accidents and deaths" seems to be taken out of thin air.

Thread closed because it seems to have been a trolling attempt that the good posters of the forum spotted immediately and reported.
