painting trees

ive spent a bit of time in belarus.i noticed over there almost everywhere the trees are painted with white (lime id presume) up their trunks to about five foot ..anybody able to enlighten me as to why this is done..curious.

That reason suggests to me that you are planting the wrong tree at the wrong latitude. I would also wonder at the detriment to the tree of blocking the trees lenticils (pores) with paint.
Wound painting has also been popular in the past but is useless.
