Best of luck to those who might get some snow in the next day. Im still far more interested in Sun and Mon given my location. All models showing that as an all snow event for about 3 days now. Thats the only thing theyve consistently agreed on recently.

bit of a downgrade by met a few mins ago :

    17 January 2013 23:20

    Today

Rain will be widespread overnight and heavy in places, but will clear the south and west before dawn. The rain will turn to sleet or snow on higher ground across northern counties accompanied by strong southeast winds low cloud and mist. Lowest temperatures 1 to 4 degrees.

    Tomorrow

Rain and sleet will become confined to Ulster and northern parts of Connaught and north Leinster during Friday, while other areas will become brighter with scattered showers in the west. Winds will slacken in most areas but staying strong southeast across northern counties for much of the day. Highest temperatures will range from 4 degrees in Ulster to 9 or 10 degrees in the southwest.

    Outlook

Saturday night will be dry and calm but very cold with a widespread sharp to severe air and ground frost with the risk of freezing fog and icy patches. Sunday will be bright and mostly dry but very cold with frost and fog lingering in some inland and northern areas. Rain will spread in from the southwest during Sunday night accompanied by fresh southeast winds, and the rain will turn to sleet or snow over the midlands north and east - especially over high ground. Monday will be a cold mostly cloudy day with occasional wintry showers of hail or sleet with a continuing risk of snow over high ground. After a sharp night frost, Tuesday will be cold again with scattered wintry showers - these mainly near coasts, but many places will remain dry. Then more rain will spread countrywide from the west on Wednesday night, introducing somewhat less cold conditions for the latter part of the week, but it will remain changeable and unsettled.

Thanks, we'll all be rooting for Cork and Waterford if(when) the chance arises, you people deserve a break.

Can't say I have any real interest in this whole event but for anyone who does, it might be interesting to compare the actual temps & dew points with what NAE is predicting for midnight, obviously the further out the less reliable it'll be but should give an idea on how locally accurate it is

Actual temps on the IWN map

18Z GFS op run only had support from about 2/20 ensembles for that rapid breakdown. Most of the ensembles actually dipped a litte colder as the op run was getting milder. Then a more gradual rise in temps with a few still below -5 at 180 hours.

I linked to IWN recently and it broke the site with the traffic, hopefully it has the backup snow servers up and running!

Once you get enough of it falling, it cools all the lying/surface water sufficiently to allow it stick.
If memory serves, the big snow of '82 (?) started off with persistent rain.
    Then sleet.
Then the biggest flakes I ever saw before or since. Massive, heavy yokes that fell rather than floated.
It looked as if it would all turn to slush in no time, but within an hour or so, the contours of a bicycle parked under an overhanging hedge had become totally obscured.

4.7 C South of the Wicklow mountains, driven rain from the southeast is battering the windows.

M2 Buoy DP 2.2C and dropping as of 23:00. Step in the right direction; and above a certain level in Wicklow this is all surely going to fall as snow.

Not liking the Met's downgrade... Think i'll have to avoid all UK stations and message boards tomorrow so I don't have a fit of jealous rage tomorrow watching them get pasted as we all paddle about in pools of water!!! :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 194 ✭✭rilz

Been heavy rain here all day. Very heavy. Some flooding about.

Gerry Murphy on RTE 1 now, some sleet and possible snow on hills tomorrow. No mention of excessive accumulations at lower levels that some on here are forecasting. Of course, he could be wrong.

How many times does it have to be said that snow in the UK would help our cause?

    Am I missing something here?
Is there some sort of secret Brotherhood of the Snow?

Always thought that for children and young adults, SNOW = GOOD.
For people over about 12 years old, SNOW = BAD.

Interesting thread but very strange people.
    :)
