My mate has just finished his TEFL and seen this opportunity. I was wondering has anybody ever worked as an intern through TEFL?

Intern teacher doesn't really make sense to me. I live in Taiwan and just bull****ted my way through the first few months of teaching. The pay also seems pretty bad. 12000 baht is about 250 euro, but accommodation and food is covered.

    Thanks for any help received.

Any sort of teach English "internship" is a scam, considering there are plenty of jobs for English teachers.

How did you get your visa for Taiwan? Is pay there any good?

I travelled around Thailand for 6 months a few years back and asked the locals the question of what the average wage is. Never intended to work there myself but was curious. Like most people, there were huge variances from each person I asked but the general answer I always got was this. The average Thai can expect about 12-15000 baht a month if their jobs involved tips and 18000 if not. Specialised jobs paid more of course.

However they were very resentful of the fact that 'farrangs' could earn up to 40,000 baht a month for doing the same job. Obviously it all depends on the job but I think your friend is getting about the average, depending on what exactly 'food and accommodation' actually means. Poor accommodation is rife in the city and not worth living in. What is the food allowance is another question I would be asking.

Pay is pretty good for here, earning around 1500 euro per month. Living costs are pretty cheap, But when ya leave and change money back to euro it feels like fu*k all. I came here on a holiday visa and found a job and just changed to working visa. Very easy. All ya need is to be a native speaker and have a degree.

Have you travelled to China mainland? How easy was it to get a visa for China in Taiwan?

Minimum wage for Thai people with no degree is 300 baht/day .. Has your friend a degree ?? Most schools or even language schools in Thailand now require at least a degree plus TEFL ..

International schools requires teaching certificate .. Salary is between 2 to 2,500 Euros, plus rent allowance, first class medical card and round trip tickets to home.

If your friend has a degree and TEFL, it shouldn't be that hard to find a job .. A lot of schools there now are bi-lingual .. English native speakers are even more in demand .. Going rate should be approx 30.000 baht .. Street food is cheap and yummy :) .. Rent is between 3 to 5,000 Baht per month depends on the area ..

Check this link out .. http://www.ajarn.com/ .. Hope this helps ..

I've yet to travel to China. Impossible to get a work visa from China to Taiwan and vice versa. You need to get a health check to get a work visa, and each country doesn't recognize the other country.

If it's just a holiday visa you're looking for, I think its just a matter of filling out the visa application online.

    Hi
Just saw this post and was wondering if any of you could help me. Myself and my boyfriend are planning to head to Thailand to teach English and have started the process with american tesol institute which offer a special thai programme (course online, four day cultural seminar and guaranteed job). Only problem is they want a program fee of $399. I am under no illusions that they are definately gaining more from this than I am but we thought it would be a good way to get TEFL certified (both have degrees) and its cheaper than most of these programs. Do you think we are about to be scammed??

    Hi,

I'm no expert at all, but my daughter and her boyfriend are TEFLing in Bangkok at the moment having done the course online using Groupon at a cost of about £70 ( we are in London). They then applied for work via different agencies and found work fairly easily. They did a skype interview which was basically a way for the agency to hear their accents. It appears they prefer clear American accents, but neutral English was acceptable. They are working in separate schools and three different ones each week, if that makes sense. They arrived in time for the start of the school year last October and have saved enough to pay for their three week trip through Cambodia and Vietnam which they are on right now. good luck

Im about to sign up for a tefl internship in either Koh chang or Krabi. I have never thought before so I believe doing an internship is the best option.

I am going to do it with TEFL heaven. Has anyone do it before with this crowd?? Where would you recommend Koh Chang or Krabi???

I have never been to Thailand before>>>> any other advice be very much welcome..

Do NOT do an internship. Why? Because there are thousands of school who would be delighted to employ you AND pay you.

Don't listen to the online TEFL scams who say otherwise. The reason they want you to do the internship is because they get to keep your wage!

For those that don't know, we also have a Teaching Abroad forum.

    It all seem above board

I'm interested in going with http://www.experienceteachingabroad.com/blog/

Yes it an internship and cost just under 1000 euro but that covers accommodation and training for 3 weeks then its guaranteed placement of around but no more than 30000 TB per month and they keep none of the wage.

The reason I want to do the intership rather than apply straight to school is because I have no training or teaching experience whatsoever.

I feel that the internship will greatly enhance my confidence to teach.

They even want you to pay to do the internship?!

Tens of thousands of people come to Asia each year and work successfully as teachers even though they have no experience.

You are being scammed or else you work for experienceteachingabroad.com

Warning to other posters: please do not pay money for an internship teaching English. I could get you a well paying teaching job in about 10 seconds. (I won't actually do this, so don't ask! But I live in China and there are paid teaching jobs EVERYWHERE).
