Just lok at what's happening over in the eastern coast of the USA - amazing!

Ok I am as fed up as most of you by the only small amount of snow we got, BUT at least it was something........

I've been following the NYC weather forum past 12 hours or so. There have been reports of nearly 30" in places. And there's still people complaining that they were forecast 10-12" and only hit 6". I felt like wringing there blooming necks. Just goes to show, us humans are never happy with our lot. I too have given up on a prolonged cold spell this year (but im secretly still hoping for an attack of ninja snow) and i would gladly swap even that for a half decent summer with a few thunderstorms thrown in for good measure.

A few more pics robbed from CNN's website.

I'd be happy with a tenth of that snowfall.

Some flecks of snizzle falling here at the mo, barely visible mind you but snizzle all the same, not sure how it seems way too mild out.

It's all getting a bit too much when the snowmen and wimmins are at it across the pond.

    Hi MT,

Any thoughts of how the rest of the Irish winter will pan out. Is your research showing any sign of snow before St Patrick's Day?!

Your fans eagerly await any positive signs! :D

This rain we're currently having may turn to snow in the central Wicklow mtns and that's about it.
Its probably sleet already on top of lugnaquilla at 3039ft.

The ecm has been telling lies past 96hrs for weeks now as has every other model.Mt has given a window and we're relying on the liar models for signs of what's to come as is Mt now as to when or if.
I suspect it will be march before it happens as I agree with Mt,this cold is coming in stages. So far its not been able to be on top.
Sliders need to go under us ffs not over us to open up the motorway from the east.
    Eventually one will.

Thanks for your thoughts on this Whitebriar and I suppose its good to see someone is still confident of Ireland getting some decent cold this winter, albeit belatedly.

Some interesting comments you made about the models - I was not aware that they were so unreliable recently particularly within +96 hours which I would have considered a reliable time frame.

One final question - do you know if its possible for Ireland to receive a really heavy snow fall during the month of March ? I think at this stage I am clutching at straws.........:D

If you want sub-zero maximum tempertures and no thawing then the window for that is closing. However, heavy snowfalls can still occur up until the start of april and arguably these situations become less and less marginal as February goes on (lower sea surface temperatures and less saturated air)

Yes it is.March 1978 comes to mind iirc.
Quite a heavy fall lasting a week with little or no thaw untill the end.
A good 6 inches here from memory.

I recall another year ,when the local paddys day parade was called off when I was a kid.
It snowed in cork city that day.

Yes i too have a strong feeling that late Feb/March will finally deliver us cold but it is very frustrating.

From memory Ive seen about 2 or 3 heavy snow falls( 6 inchs+) during March and 1 extreme one in April (8/9 inchs) but all of the snowfalls melted within a 12-36 hour period. Snow just does not last very long once your past the 1st week of March.

  • Registered Users Posts: 777 ✭✭✭H2UMrsRobinson

I don't care if only lasts a day, I like to see it falling. That's where the thrill is.

But on the flip side of the coin there was a heat wave around paddys day last year with people swimming in the sea!

I remember it well, I also remember propably one of the warmest and sunniest weeks of 2012 was around the end of March with temperatures hitting 21C, at work/college everyone was outside on the grass eating their lunch over a number of days. Wouldnt mind if the same happens this year.

occasional hail now on my bird feeder camera.
turn on speakers you will hear the hail rather than rain.
