Saw an Arrow diesel train today sporting a new shade of dark green with white doors - is this new colour scheme going to replace the existing ugly Arrow colour combo of light-green and navy?

Well for a start the term "arrow" was dropped quite some time ago.

The 29000 DMU fleet is being repainted into this livery.

Cos 29000 DMU is so much more catchy! ;-)

Well the Arrow brand was phased out 11 years ago and replaced by the Commuter brand which is now being phased out for just plain Irish Rail everything.

InterCity and Commuter are officially gone since the start of 2013, although Irish Rail are being very slow at removing the logos from trains (and will probably be at least another year at it at this pace).

The only service brands left are DART and Enterprise now, and even DART's got a new logo with the flag. Everything else will be Iarnrod Eireann-Irish Rail now. The real reason is probably to reduce the questions asked when Commuter DMUs operate on InterCity routes and vice-versa.

Between the broken wheel and the flying snail and Arrow and all the rest (not to mention the fleeting sight of 2700s masquerading as 22000s) IE seems to have an awful faith in "change the logo/paintjob and people will think we're a new company" - and I'm sure any number of design consultants hope that will never change.

TBF the broken wheel/flying snail had a good innings and the broken wheel is still with us in a 'swirly' circle. After that they (IR or IE or whatever they want to be called) seem to change company image every couple of years. The IR 'Killarney Junct' logo was supposedly changed due to legal action because of its resemblance to another company's logo, not sure if true or a 'pub story'.

The story usual put about was that it was being defaced to "IRA". Not sure how much truth was in that one, at the time the spin put on it officially was that it was adopting the Irish language version of its name as it's only name (the company's legal name remained Iarnrod Eireann-Irish Rail throughout, however. The logo of the Portugese rail infrastructure operator REFER is almost exactly the same but wasn't introduced until two years after Irish Rail had already dropped it's version.

That logo is now back on 146 up at Downpatrick.:)

This is Arrow livery as worn by 2600 class

The 29000 was never in Arrow Livery, only ever 'Commuter' livery
