What type of visa are you on?

Following on from the eejits in Oz thread on AH I was wondering what types of visa Irish people here in Australia are on? Seems to be the general perception that EVERYONE coming here is a GAA- jersey wearing, 10 to a house, drunk as a skunk eejit on a WHV who never ventures further than Bondi/Coogee!

Was interested to see the response here. I'm on 457 sponsored visa with partner and 2 children under 5 ( we may own a GAA jersey or two in the interests of full disclosure!).

457 with defacto for me. However, I don't own a GAA jersey because I'm from Carlow and it looks rediculous :pac:

On a student visa at the moment :D

I am on a WHV but live in Melbourne, and not in St Kilda. There are 3 in my house, all with a double bed each.

I'm hoping to get a 457 as I'm an accountant but it's looking unlikely.

    I don't own a GAA jersey

Currently de facto on partner's 574. Probably move to ENS route before that expires in late 2015.

Mod Added poll - let me know if you want it adjusted
If on defacto, then put your partners visa (as officially that is your visa)

    Is self sponsorship 457?

My brother and a few mates are doing that.

If you're on the sites and can't get sponsorred it's a way to stay though you have to pay your own Super.

How do you mean? Have they used their one year working visa or what? Do you know the costs envolved for doing what they are doing? cheers

Ok, here's the deal. There is a company that specialises in visas that charge about $6,000 for this "service" and they will get you sponsored. My brother and another guy I know both are on this. My brother is a painter and the other guy is a labourer. You set up your own company and sponsor yourself but you need to pay your own super, but anyway it works.

I also know another person, who went through the process himself and got it all sorted for about $900.

None of these 3 people have any qualifications

If you are desperate to stay and don’t mind forking out $6,000 then it’s an option. For $900, I saw a lot of stress and uncertainty. No way that it is 100% like this.

As well as that there are other ways….I know people on student visas who attend a college on Saturday mornings for 3 hours once a week. They work the rest of the week on ABN.

As long as you do not fall into the trap of becoming illegal you are ok.

Everything really depends on how desperate you want to stay. A lot of people will just head to Canada after the 2 years here.

I would not pay to much attention to people over in After Hours.
After Hours is full of people sitting in manny's house wishing they had the nerve to move out of mammy's house and go abroad or economic refugees who failed when abroad. :pac:
it's easier to mock than do

For me. Citizen in both countries

    WHV but possibly 457 soon.

Also a few of my mates in Brisbane are doing the self sponsorship, they have no quals also. Might look into it myself.

The visa costs are a few hundred. 5k+ to set up a company is ridiculous imo.
A friend of mine is setting up his own company at the minute it's not costing him anything near that.

417 but hoping for the 457 all going well with work. I live near Coogee so their perception is probably right to an extent! But Coogee aren't bad places, they're some of the most desirable in Sydney. My Aussie workmates are looking around Bondi for a house because they want to live there, but the way you hear some clueless morons talk about it you'd think it was an Irish slum.

Coogee is a rip off for rent. And why do people want to live off the train lines?

East 'burbs in general is a rip off. Moving to Rosebery next week, Inner is decent.

457, was sponsored 3 wks after I got a job. Have applied for PR so hopefully will get it soon. And have a gaa jersey out with me...!

Can't understand the popularity of the eastern suburbs either, far nicer and more central suburbs to live in sydney, and way cheaper rent!!

Is this even legal? I've heard of people doing it recently but don't see how you can satisfy the criteria must meet to sponsor someone.

I'm on a 487 regional state sponsoship visa. After living in a regional area for 2 years I am eligible for PR.

You set up a business and that business sponsors you....what's the problem?

So who holds the visa the 'service company or you' ? is it a 457 visa?
According to this, the minimum trading time is 12 months to be able to sponsor.

any one got more specific details.

Gonna dob me in are you hussey?

I'm pretty sure you haven't read everything there is to read on this as I know 3 people that are on it since last year...one being my brother.

If anyone is desperate to stay and can't get sponsored, it can be done. I'll find out the details from the guy that did it on his own or can give the name of the company that does it for that over-inflated price.

Send me an IM if you want but I think this is really only suited to tradies or people on ABN numbers that can actually generate strong income.

Found an interesting post on another forum that sort of sinks this theory.

I know at least two people that have gone down this route. As far as I know, the company needs to have two owners/directors. Then one puts the other forward for sponsorship as a director.
