Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Apparently, Adkins may have been sacked by the saints according to sources on twitter. Strange if true.

Always the ****ing same. The ultimate poisened chalice in football is taking a team up that aren't equipped for the next level. He got two promotions on the bounce ffs! What exactly were his board expecting?

I don't understand either. They look like they would stay up this season as well.

I'd be surprised if this is true. Not straight after the chelsea result

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,382 ✭✭✭✭greendom

I find this really hard to believe. They're on a great run of form and have just held Chelsea to a draw at Stamford Bridge.

On the other hand they let Pardew go when he was doing a good job for them.

Maybe some of the Saints board were talking to Roman Abramovich on Wednesday :D

Very strange if true, in fact it makes no sense but as soon as teams come up they think sacking the guy that got them there is the right option and in the majority of cases it does nothing at all to benefit the team.

Adkins to take over from Rafa, Rafa to the Saints. :pac:

I hope it is not true as well to be honest.

Would be surprised if they sacked him, they are a good run of form. And it is pretty tight down at the bottom of the table, so it would be risky sacking him. Not sure who they could bring in as a new manager either, no real outstanding candidates available.

The Mark Hughes train rides again...

Mauricio Pochetino to take over apparently.

What an utterly stupid move if true. They are in good form and if it continues, they will stay up. A change now means certain relegation. Idiotic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,787 ✭✭✭Benimar

Two straight promotions, two defeats in 12, holding the European Champions to a draw on their own ground. And they are sacking the manager...da fuk??!!

Nonsensical decision. Obviously Southampton feel they need a 'big name' manager rather than the good one they have.

If Mark Hughes gets the job the Southampton board should be run out of town.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

Betting has been suspended on Pochetino it seems.

    Southampton FC ‏@officialsaints

Southampton Football Club has appointed Mauricio Pochettino as First Team Manager having relieved Nigel Adkins of his duties. #saintsfc

    Seems very harsh on Adkins.

    Shocking.

Unless he whipped it out at a club function or something this is very difficult to understand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,463 ✭✭✭Kiwi_knock

They deserve to be relegated now.

F*ck off Southampton. Just f*ck off.

+1. Brainless move by whoever is in charge, hope they go down.

Would be madness to appoint Pochettino, he hardly covered himself in glory in his last season at Espanyol.

Crazy to sack him with only a few days left in the transfer window, no time for anyone to assess the squad etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

Wen you go to London and go 2-0 down and come back to take a point you dont expect to be sacked a few days later.

    Stupid decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

Last 12 league games they have Won 4 Drew 6 and Lost only 2 which is a great run for a promoted club.

Hope they end up in the conference tbh

Absolutely embarrassed to be a Southampton fan today. Won't be giving them any more money after this, disgraceful decision.

I was really liking Southampton this year. I hope they go down now, ****ing ridiculous decision.

They gave his job to a guy who never managed a team before!!! WOW.

    Jokeshop.

I'm sure this guy who was sacked by Espanyol though is better equipped to keep Southampton in the Premier league that the guy who got them promoted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,791 ✭✭✭✭JPA

Makes no sense unless they brought in a real top manager or a real experienced PL battler which they haven't.

I'd say they've brought in the worst kind of manager possible.

    Nothing surprises me in football.

    Southampton are 15/8 for relegation.

While I'm a big fan of Pochettino, this decision makes no sense whatsoever.

Adkins was doing a good job, you could see he had really turned the corner with them lately. Cannot see any reason why the board sacked him, utterly stupid decision.

Laughable really. I really dislike Adkins and you could probably understand it if it was done in October when they had only won one game, but their form has massively improved ever since they got the good result away to QPR.

If it means they go down, however, all the better. Massive massive gamble to appoint an untested foreign manager. Here's hoping it doesn't pay off.

Adkins was doing a great job, which makes it all the more annoying. Back to back promotions and a good run of results in the league after a very unlucky run of fixtures at the beginning of the season.

Absolute crazy decision to sack him! Especially after a very solid win against Chelsea.

What were the boards expectations of him? Adkins is good enough to go on and get another top footballing job, great manager!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,382 ✭✭✭✭greendom

They have history of this though. Pardew was doing a great job there when they let him go. Perhaps they know best

5live and talksport both say this is his first job as a manager. (maybe they meant the PL)

He previously managed Espanyol , typical talksport not mentioning relevant details

Maybe 'manager' as opposed to 'first team coach' is the distinction?

Really are some birdbrains running football clubs these days. Where did they expect Southampton to be right now in their first season back in the Premiership, top 4??!!!

To them football doesnt exist outside the EPL

Complete disgrace if true. The club could not look worse if they tried, given the teams current form. I'd say something if they were well adrift and playing poorly, but they are ABOVE the relegation zone and playing great stuff.

Football is in a shocking state when you see the likes of these kinds of sackings, happening all too regularly recently.

I hope Southampton get back to back relegations as a result. It's what they deserve (feel sorry for the fans that such clowns can own the club they love).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,477 ✭✭✭✭Knex*

I honestly don't get this. Can't even begin to see a glimmer of logic behind the decision.

    ****ing baffling.

    lol

Might be a bit much but I really want them to go down now
