    Nothing in the banks now is geared towards customer service/convenience but I doubt any way that it will be as simple as being able to do it in an hour or so.

    Whatever you do, don't forget to bring photo ID with you.

    You need to send them a letter with your account number. Also sign the letter.

    AIB will contact you tell you how much you owe them on fees.

    Once thats sorted they will close the account. Pretty simple and effective they are. Pity about the charges

    :confused::confused:
    It takes only a few minutes.
    Hand back your debit card, sign a form or two, pay outstanding fees, and that is it.

    Could you empty the account and then close it? I want to switch banks and don't want to give them a penny more. I'm guessing they will just not close it until there is something in there to pay the fees.

    i had nothing in it when i asked to close it. The first i did be letter, they transfered the miuns balance to my other account. Then the last account i was in the branch, they just totted up the charges and i lodged enough to cover it. That was all.

    out of interest
    Why would you close a personal account ?
    Is there any typical reasons ?

    BTW genuine question.

    The fees are too much, they keep increasing mortgage rates, still paying staff high bonuses Eric etc.
    They are in the bailout and cost the Irish people Billlions.

    I assume that all direct debits will be cancelled as well?

    You can do that online, before you go in to close the account.

    I would have thought one would need to contact whom ever is debiting to ask them to stop or debit another account. How would they know the account was closed. They might even charge one a fee for any failed DD.
