A hipster isn't one who does not conform.
A hipster is one who conforms through wearing the conformist uniform of the non conformist.

A bit like a goth but with a quieter smugitude and less desperation.

But isn't being a hipster just doing/being into particular stuff in order to look cool rather than genuinely being into it?

well, on some levels yes. I got this heavily tattooed because it looks cool. The rest is effortless
