I thought they always sold the consoles for less than they cost to build and then make all their money from game sales? Also, how much is a new game likely to cost on the PS4? €60?

I thought these new consoles might draw me away from PC gaming but that doesn't look likely anymore.

Sony have said they won't be selling it at a big loss like they did with the PS3. I'd expect them to sell at a small loss if Microsoft announce a competitive price, but probably 399 and make a small profit on it

The parts in it aren't that expensive tbh. I'd be surprised if they didn't have a price under 400

I agree, and I think the same goes for the XBone. Apart from the Kinect and Eye, they are both made from simple commodity hardware with only slight alterations.

I would actually be surprised if either console was higher than $400, and I wouldn't be shocked if the XBone launches at $350.

Looking at both consoles, and if im honest im underwhelmed.

The PS4 is all sneaky and cloak and dagger with no actual console pictures, while the One seems to be shooting its own foot off with the connect to the net once a day rumours, and of course the "Wanna lend this to your friend. 40 quid please"

I think i might just stick to my PC, as a lot of the console only games seem to be coming to the PC more frequently.

XBone should be more expensive surely, as it's got a Kinect with it?

Apparently this Eye won't come with every PS4.

The eye wouldn't have been as expensive anyway. There is an extra cost with the PS4 going with GDDR5 instead of DDR3.

Yeah its improving a little ever year, it gets most major multi platform games but it will never get the the big titles that Sony and MS pay millions to keep exclusive. in the past MS has been the more likely of the two to let there exclusive games be ported to the PC.

Having said that you'd be surprised by the amount of exclusives the PC has as well.

The Kinect looks like a decent bit of technology tbf, and with it going with every Xbox One, I'd say it'd push the price up. Spec wise, neither the XBox One or the PS4 will be too expensive.

If Microsoft announce their price tomorrow, Sony will either match or beat it, otherwise would expect Sony to announce theirs at 399, unless they have two models

There is no extra cost.

The PS4 was announced with GDDR5 - the price didn't go up because it never had DDR3 in the first place, there is no "instead of".

I'm pretty sure he means that the RAM used by the PS4 is more expensive than the Xbone's.

I'm talking in terms of comparison. That'll be a higher cost than MS will have.

Okay, I think I missed a memo when people decided to call Xbox one an xbone. That is one disgusting name lads...

The blame for that goes to MS. They had Xbone one the walls or something if I remember right during the reveal. I'd say it is really dumb rather than disgusting, though.

won't be a cent cheaper than 499 imo

    It's both.

I'd be shocked if it was that much. The parts won't cost much more than 300 tbh. Sony would be shooting themselves if they put it at 499, unless 499 is a higher end model with the PS Eye, Move, and a Playstation World/PS+ subscription included.

Only a day and a bit to Sony. I'm actually quite annoyed they're having it at 3am UTC. Europe is an enormous market for Sony (their biggest?) and 3am on a weekday is hardly ideal for us. I know the event is held in the US but it attracts worldwide attention.

Well, tbf, it's a big market, but they need to get a time that suits Japan too, so was always going to be late for us

I'm guessing that means you're going for Sony then?

Well they could be making them a lot cheaper this time. I know a lot of people here are speculating but I don't think any of us really know the industrial cost per unit to manufacture. Not sure about the claims of selling below cost either. A lot of the cost has to come from R&D rather than on the console raw materials so I always assumed that "they're not making a profit" meant that it took a few years to recoup all the money spent on just making the console.

Well, this clearly proves that the Sony Terrorstation is really just a console for terrorists. Anybody who loves freedom should obviously buy an Xbone.

Actually this has been estimated based on required components to be $250 (PS4) and $300 (Xbox) wholesale already.

Aren't they specialised though? I always thought that the hardware inside videogame consoles wasn't available for regular PCs. Not to mention that mass production of the same specs should affect the price too.

Both consoles are mostly made with out-of-the-box components so the cost should be lower. There are still expensive components, like the GDDR5 RAM in the PS4 and the Kinect on the Xbone, but both should come in under $500.

In either case, I don't think they will announce a price for either system until Gamescom or until a month or two beforehand.

Hasn't E3 historically been where pricing was announced?

I do remember price cuts at E3 but cannot remember any announcements. Could be wrong of course.

Didn't Sony announce the PS3 price at E3 '05 and there was outrage. You had Phil Spencer on stage trying to justify it with the real time Spider Man facial tech demo.
