Hello, both my wife and I are already on social welfare but we were given a leaflet by the hospital explaining what benefits we could avail of in the coming years. Is it possible for me to become a full time carer for my wife and get paid for it in the meantime? We are kind of confused and would rather have all the information correct before going to the local office to sit and wait for hours on end to be told different or just to have a few simple questions asked. If anyone knows or has any advice please we would be grateful.

Hi OP. Sorry to hear of your wife's illness. It is possible to get half-rate carer's allowance in conjunction with certain other social welfare payments, provided you meet the requirements for carer's allowance. If the payment you are on (e.g. Jobseekers Benefit/Allowance, Back to Education) doesn't qualify for half-rate carer's allowance, you can apply for carer's allowance instead.

There is further information here about carer's allowance http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/carers/carers_allowance.html and here about half-rate carer's allowance http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/carers/half_rate_carers_allowance.html

You can phone Citizen's Information on 0761 074000, they are very helpful and will answer your questions. The Irish Cancer Society may also able to offer advice on financial matters phone: 1800 200 700 http://www.cancer.ie/how-we-can-help/coping/managing-money. Take care.

The problem is that if you're on jobseekers, it will be cut off as you're not available for work, but you could get carers with the household benefited package...etc.. If she's on jobseekers she will be cut off, but could apply for disability.

If you're on disability yourself, you could apply for half rate carers but they might say that you're obviously not entitled to disability if you are well enough to mind your wife.
    They're a devious bunch....lol

If you contact the citizens advice center, they might be able to advise you.

Sorry to hear about your wife. I hope she gets through treatment as easily as possible.
