Do people who refuse to get into a taxi because it's driven by a 'non-national' (to use that odd term) - would they refuse to shop in Spar with an Indian lad behind the counter?

Or they do check out the rosters and only shop there when there's Irish folk working?

Or do they avoid Spar altogether because it's not an Irish company?

I'm just wondering how far they take it.

Maybe they do avoid Spar and only shop in Centra but do they not shop in Centra unless there's Irish staff there?

Cause I don't see how that's too much different from a foreign taxi driver who drives for an Irish taxi firm. Surely a NRC taxi driver pays something to NRC, doesn't he?

might want to stop using the term PC brigade. it's basically the new 'I'm not racist, but'..
especially in a conversation centered on discrimination of people based on f**king skin colour.

My perference is for an Irish driver, tbh I got sick to death narrating every route to and from the city center (Dublin) when I got foreign drivers.

After a few pints I just can't be arsed so I opt for the Irish guy and have myself a little snooze.

What I won't do, and something which I find disgusting is flag down a taxi on the street then wave him on when I see he's black/asia/east European etc.. But I will ask if they know how to get me to my distination before I get in, most don't so I take another cab.

This really is just racist. Unless you're asking to see the driver's passport before you get in, you're making a decision about the desirability of using that taxi based on the colour of the driver's skin. Which is pretty much textbook racism.

Then there's the bald statement that most of the money is wired home, offered without a shred of actual evidence and in direct contradiction of Irish taxi drivers' claims that deregulation has meant there's no living to be made from it anymore. If it's really happening, there should be at least some evidence above and beyond the imagination of a racist commentator.

    .

To give you a third option; I'd probably buy the same thing cheaper from some Indian bloke off E-Bay.

It's his choice to order a taxi from who ever he likes, but I don't see his problem with non national taxi drivers. They're still living here and contributing to our economy. Singling people out for not being Irish is unbelievable in this day and age really. I have a black friend who was born here, if he was to become a taxi driver would he be acceptable? He's obviously not an obvious national after all!
If everyone took this stupid tribal approach to life we'd all be inbred.
    The man's got issues.

Did we slip into a time-warp in the last week or something? Between this clown, the Councillors making anti-traveller comments & calling for drink driving laws to be ignored and a convicted pedophile/rapist being allowed to walk free...

wtf is going on! It's like being back in 1978 =/

Personally I've had enough irritating rows with a disproportionate number of foreign taxi drivers that I now avoid them (I don't so much walk past them as hang back and let some other mug get in ahead of me), sure it's unfair of me, in the same way that it's probably unfair if me to cross the road if I see a group of loud, bawdy, tracksuited, teenage denizens from certain parts of Dublin walking towards me, but again experience has also taught me that it's better to be safe and spammed as a classist bigot, then sorry, with a gushing head wound.

The real fault of course lays with the Government and the regulator, but as I'm not that optimistic about either fixing even the smallest of problems any time soon, it's casual racism for me from now on I’m afraid!

People don't get a pass on holding terrible beliefs simply because there are worse examples of said beliefs in the world.
Absolutely, though a little perspective might be needed before said poster gets called "a horrible racist", trust me, there's a hellava lot worse out there, lets try to keep it a little more cordial,eh?
    thank you :)

Problem : Drivers overcharging and taking circuitous routes.

This actually happened to me with an irish taix man, he thought I didn't know my way around the city and I noticed he was taking the long route, I told him to go the proper way or I'd report him (and he did but I wouldn't know where to report him, it was all a bluff:D). I've never had this problem with foreign taxi drivers, in some case they give me deals just for having a laugh with them. Needless to say any taxi numer on my phone are all for foreign ones!!

I wonder how these people who want an "Irish" driver determine the driver is actually Irish?
Perhaps they have a spider sense that tingles when someone Irish is behind the wheel of a taxi?
Or a magic device capable of divining someone's nationality with a quick scan?

Or maybe they're full of shit?
We may never know the truth...
We do, it's the last one.

The only evidence needed in statements like that is to drop the 'fact' bomb or to suggest anyone who disagrees with a comment based on zero evidence is 'stupid'.

That way you can't question it, because you don't want to be stupid!

    Classic sh!t for brains maneuver.

You see that's something I've never encountered. Maybe it's just because I live somewhere easy to get to. Where do most of these foreign cab drivers not know where to get to?

The only time I've ever had a taxi driver not know how to get somewhere he was a Dub and we were in Dublin. Now I didn't know how to get there either so we had to consult a map. But there you go.

I just tend not to talk to taxi drivers much at all so I don't get into rows with them, be they Irish or foreign.

Oh here we go again... racism racism racism.. would the do gooders ever give it a rest. Do I integrate or socialise with blacks or asians... no! Do I wish to.... no! Do I hate all non nationals... no! Have I ever insulted or been rude to a non national or am I likely to commit a race hate crime... no! Would I choose an Irish taxi driver over a non national one... yes. Am I racist??

Sure they're always feckin' at it, aren't they? Trying not to be dicks.

    Feckin' eejits.
Do I integrate or socialise with blacks or asians... no!

If an Asian guy worked in your office would you not go for work drinks with the lad or jaysus, god forbid, maybe develop a friendship?

Is he off limits cause he's Asian?

What an odd thing to firmly state.
Would I choose an Irish taxi driver over a non national one... yes.

Why though? And what if a black Irish man was driving a taxi? How would you know he's Irish.

Or are you one of those people who thinks that black people can't be Irish?

You're actually the first person to mention Nigerians.

The good senator who prompted this thread has a problem with all non-Irish taxi drivers apparently.

And I'll thank you not to poo-poo my circle jerk. That's just unhygienic.

Personally I would only get a taxi the odd weekend when hitting pubs
1 month ago was my first time to get into a cab with an African driver.
Told him where I wanted to go (obvious most direct route I assumed he would go like every other time i went to this pub)
He goes the polar opposite direction.
Im like ehhhh..ok maybe he knows a better route or quicker route, kept my mouth shut as I didnt want to be a moany passenger or look racist.
As we went further and further I questioned him about the route.
Lord god. He started going on about back roads this back roads that. I got frustrated then start telling him, the directions. I politely made a reference to Sat navs being handy. (i allways use them)
Got to Destination Paid him in full. (extra 3 euro more then usual)
Now ... I dont give a Sh1t3 if my driver is pink, black, purple, gay, or from the planet Zog. I just want to get to my destination ASAP and for the standard fair. Rant Over

I can see his point. If i was out for the night and had to get a cab home i would make sure it's an Irish driver that gets my custom and my money.

Would you ask them for a passport or proof of citizenship?

Would you allow a 'non national' doctor to treat you, or one of your children?

Maybe he flys to Australia to see an Irish doctor every time he's sick?

If you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to participate in the thread.

I'm glad you don't integrate or socialise with the above. I wouldn't wish your company on my family and friends, ever.
