We have a small back garden and its pretty torn up at the moment - We had a new shed put in and the grass didn't recover from where the kids trampoline was. Its also quite muddy.
I am hoping to help the lawn by just spreading some new grass seed.
Any advice on going about this?
    - When?
    - How to prepare the ground first?

    Thanks

Grass is a lot tougher than we give credit for, if your lawn was well established before the shed was built, it more than likely will recover when growth starts in March/April. Most lawns are at their worst at this time of year, having to battle frost, rain, etc. In your case it sounds like compaction is the problem so when you get time, try aerating it with a garden fork, pressing it into the ground at about 15cm intervals and at least 15cm deep. This will help the roots to do their job when growth starts. In April spread some proprietary lawn fertiliser to encourage growth further. If the bare patch from the trampoline is still a problem then sow a mix of lawn seed with potting compost (about 20% seed to 80% compost) in May, this can be spread on the bare patch, just keep it watered initially until the new grass establishes. Remember that cutting the grass regularly encourages "tillering" i.e. spreading of grass.
