Cousin asked me to look at the desk top for the kids as it is very slow turning on. There is only 17gb used out of 200gb.

Any reason why it is doing this. how can I can fix this for them.

if you go into control panel , system - and depending on the OS you will find the system specs in there some where ... please post the specs

17gb out of 200gb is storage used . this will not have a lot, if any impact on speed - what we are interested in is ram , processor and what OS

what do the kids use the machine for ... if is basic stuff it may be easier to run umbuntu instead of windows ....

processer is dual cpu e2220 @2.40hgz

    Ram is 3gb

    32 bit operating system.

    its windows vista basic.

Think they mainly use it for the internet and games.

I'd suggest the usual here. A good defrag and a run of CCleaner.

How old is the Windows install? It might be time for a reinstall. Have a look through Programs and Features too, there could be loads of toolbars and whatever else.

Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy, do an update, do full scan, then fix all problems found. This should help.

do all said above and also in the tools section of ccleaner go into the startup and you can disable startup programs - if you are not sure about the programs google "programx startup" and you will find out if it is needed or not

also remove any unused programs toolbars etc and you can also disable some services - wait till everything that you can remove is removed and then carry out the defrag

and remember for finding out how to do .....google is your friend

    Might have a virus.

See what virus software is running on it. If none, you can download AVG or Avast for free just to check it. Could run it and leave it scanning overnight if it's slow.

No virus. All the above is not helping.

How can I reinstall the windows vista Basic without the disk. I formatting and restalling may help. But they can't find a disk if any came with it

it could be the hard drive ....download and burn an iso image of UBCD to a data disc with this. boot from the disc on the computer and in the HDD menu you will find Vivard .it will run a diagnostic on the os hard drive first before you go reinstalling . if the drive is gone a reinstall will be a waste of time ....

Brother reset it to factory setting an and it's still very slow.

    please define slow ....

computers can sometimes take ten to twenty minutes to boot up but once that is done the machine runs away smoothly ... vivard is a diagnostic to see first if there is a problem with the os drive ....

imo if the os drive is gone a factory reset won't help ....

what make of drive is it, btw ?

just read back there and see it wasn't mentioned that it was a pentium processor ...if your slow boot up time is somewhere between, just starting to be painful and "cotfwy?!!" it is probably the older generation processor combined with vista ....

that's where another OS like umbuntu, linux mint and the likes would come in to play .... only started to learn about alternative operating systems recently ... starting to like what i see ....

Damn straight. Those scare-tactic commercials on TV are like "Does it take your email longer than THREE SECONDS to load? This may be caused by Registry Errors, Virus, etc etc. Call us now!"
