Yeah been thinking of that myself. Will take it out asap.

You'd be surprised the difference weight in the boot could make. It obviously causes the light to project upwards and can dazzle oncoming drivers. I had my astra loaded a couple of weeks ago ( half of a ton weight to be exact) and the lights were shinning way up I had to turn them down on the switch i know there is not that kind of weight in your boot but still every bit makes a difference you could also try that. The switch generally has numbers on even turn it one down can make a difference as the lights are shinning down then.

Being serious here OP , but is there any chance that you were driving on roads that were flooded in parts today? I was myself and got flashed several times and low and behold a hazardous patch of road quickly followed. There were 2 collisions I came across today because of the flooding and oncoming drivers used their headlights in strobe mode to alert oncoming traffic. I myself gave a brief flash (cheeky) on occasion today after going through some floods.

Off topic: I don't normally condone or practise the unnecessary flashing of headlights but most people here know the potential for destruction once you hit a flood driving at 50+ kph, unfortunately not enough people out there either know or pay enough attention to the roads to prepare for a flood.

Both collisions I passed today (during daylight, on straight stretches of road w/hard shoulder) involved 2 cars; one car driving into the rear of another. In each one, either driver 1 didn't see the flood until the last minute and broke heavily, in this case they couldn't have been looking at the road as Ray Charles would have seen the oncoming flood. Or driver 2 was the one not paying attention and only saw driver 1 creeping through the flood at the last second. Thankfully nobody appeared to be hurt in the two minor collisons, but it's still going to be a pain in the ass for the involved parties to sort out, and these easily avoidable accidents contribute to the many that inevitably push insurance premiums up. I of course am an impeccable driver:pac:

Anyway, sorry about the rant, I don't normally post in the motors forum and maybe should keep it that way.:o OP if 'flooding' isn't an issue on the roads you were driving, best of luck with your lights!

P.S. Don't get me started on the amount of rebels going around with no lights on during the darkening hours, they.........ok ok I'm done sorry, coat got, good luck:D

No, I wasn't on flooded roads. I been only on uneven/****ty roads on rathmines.

Strangely enough I drive around Gardiner Street most days.

I'll be too blinded by the sounds of things to read your licence plate :D

Drive to a topaz and check the alignment of your lights primatively in the mirror provided by the air and water. If it's blinding you it's blinding others and you're a liability :) Given the reception you received on the way home I think that's already a given anyway.

Have you your fog lights on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,028 ✭✭✭anthony4335

Rear view dims but the sides don't so i can safely say i would have been blinded only for the dimming in the rear one.

Also when i say blue lights i mean slightly brigher good quality standard bulbs with a blue tinte rather than hids :p

Wing mirrors on some cars do auto dim, my 2007 saab 9-5 has auto dimming wing mirrors.

I recently replaced a level sensor what was gone since I bought the car, and for about 2 weeks at night time I would get the odd flash from someone. It turn out I was in the wrong lights were slightly high. I did check them at first but it turns out I was a little too close the the wall to do it correctly and misread the instructions, 25ft 2inch drop for halogen 4 inch drop for xenons.

My mother has them on her car, she calls them 'fairy lights'.

Does the OP have BMW xenons?

They seem to use a particularly bright output and I am constantly getting blinded by other motorists who assume I've my full beams on, I then give them a flash to show that I don't and they flash more!!

I'd suggest getting them adjusted during the next service, I will probably ask for mine to be adjusted. The newer LED angel eyes and bi-xenons seem to be particularly annoying for other road users but they are adaptive headlights so they are constantly moving which may not help but I am also getting blinded by people flashing their lights right into my eyes.

Was driving today, and I think people weren't flashing yesterday. It seems like it was just uneven road. Even slightest uneven hill/bump causes it to look like flash. Rathmines is pretty ****ed up road if you ask me so that might be the problem. I was driving on normal good even surface from blanch today and didn't get flashed a single time.

It's just your driving a BMW, everyone automatically thinks you a W**ker!!

Only joking, remove the batteries, they could be the cause, but they would also be reducing your MPG. (Mile Per Gallon, the amount of fuel you use).

My money is on the headlights not being secure and wobbling up and down.

Installed new battery today and took old one out. It's 02/2009 so I assume still can be used. No idea where to keep it though. Any services that pay at least any kind of money for batteries? :D

Well a lot of the road from blanch to town is dual lanes so OP wouldn't have been blinding people a lot of the time until Phibsboro.

Dunno about the wobbling would that not be regardless of the road?

Rathmines road is fine in my experience, fairly straight and even.

Go to a garage and ask if they will dispose of it for you.

Have you gotten rid of the two in the boot, or is your battery in your boot, and now you just have one?

    Well I don't mean rathmines...
from Richmod Street South where the portobello college is up to the junction with Dame Street (N81) <- **** that quality tbh. I am sure many know what I am talking about.

And yes when you enter from N3 onto a roundabout, and when you go straight there is some wobbly/uneven spots.

    And:
My main battery (the one running car) is in the boot. And I had another battery bought and just left there in the boot. So today I installed new battery and carried old one home.

TBH I drive both those routes regularly and find them fine, I suspect you accidentally had your fogs on.

I think those are bad roads :(
Could be because I have 225/40x18 tires which causes car to bump even on small holes?
No I didn't I am sure of that. I triple checked.

I think both those roads are fine, no ramps etc, I have a very low car on 215/45/17 and it doesn't cause flashes, possibly as it's so low.

I reckon something is wrong with your lights. They are misaligned, too bright etc.

Man, the suspension on those 3 series isn't that bad, mine is lower and firmer than yours and I've never noticed what you describe.

Since your not sure you're even being flashed, after doing the checks you've done I would simply forget about it.

And if someone flashes, it is usually, two short sharp blasts of the full beams, for clear and noticeable.

Its odd as the OP's car has just had new rear springs fitted to replace the old one which were broken, so if anything, the lights would be pointing lower then before.
The weight of 1 extra battery in the boot would have a barely measurable effect on the light alignment. You need to have a couple of people in the back seats, a boot filled with heavy stuff or a trailer on the back before you would need to lower the headlight aim by the switch when they are set correctly.

Did he not just say he wrongly interpreted other cars as flashing due to the bumpy road?

Are you driving in France or Spain without headlight reflectors? :)
