Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Cult heroes

You know the type, the guys that might not the best or most skillful, but fans just take to them for their commitment or some other reason. The Zabaletas, Ameobi's, Tony Hibberts and the like.

Let's hear some from your club and why they're are cult heroes.

    Some Newcastle ones I can remember;

Antoine Siberski - Got him on a free, everyone was like wtf, he scored quite a few goals and worked his balls off and the fans loved him.

James Perch - Great underdog story, he came in and he was DREADFUL, fans would greet his appearance like Irish fans react when McShane is anywhere near the pitch. I'm not sure when it turned for him, but some excellent committed displays in numerous positions and the fans took to him, naming him Perchinio, the Mansfield Zanetti and the likes.

Nol Solano - Almost as well known for his 'extra curricular' activities but he was some player.

David Kelly - Mainly for that goal vs Portsmouth. Actually appluaded onto SJP wearing Sunderland colours such was the love for him.

Tino - Don't think I need to explain this one.

Danny Murphy, never seemed to get any credit outside of Liverpool for his performances.

Rene Higuita, Bruce Grobbelaar, Toni Schumacher, Artur Boruc, Chris Bennion

.....and from another club, the midfielder that was often late in the tackle but got there as quick as he could.

Freddy Bouma, a multitude of left backs since still hasn't been able to replace him. Got better the more he played for Villa but then got a nasty injury. Always had really good things to say about the club.

    Frank Sinclair.

Pure dung but Chelsea fans loved him.

Gabby Heinze during his short time at Man Utd.

Gets my vote also, beast of a man.

I would shoot from anywhere with him in pro ev as he had a shot power of 92 or something.

Honourable mention to Alan Wright, all 5ft 2" of him!

Some class mentions in here, lot of reading wikipedia :)

    Here's some more;

Shaun Goater - Name still chanted at Man City

Javier Zanetti - 39 and still going strong, closing in on 600 league games

Steffen Effenberg - Voted one of Bayerns greatest ever players.

Pippo Inzaghi - It's Pippo, nuff said.

Bryan Gunn - Legendary figure at Norwich

Henrik! Larsson - Celtics greatest ever player and fans loved him wherever he went. Highly respected at Man U and Barca to this day which says it all.

Eric Abidal - I was at the game right after he was taken ill and the love and adortation really did warm the heart. Been an under-rated player for years.

Angelo Palombo - 13 years at Sampdoria and still got years left in him.

Marco Matterazzi - Cult figure in Italy.

Sergio Pellissier - Always scored the goals to keep little Chievo up. Think of Le Tiss at Southampton.

Andres Iniesta - Amazing player but idolized everywhere he goes, if he gets subbed in away games he gets applauded off by all sides of the ground.

Joseba Etxeberria - Bilbao stalwart who was adored during his 15 years of loyal service to the club.

Might wanna change the first name.

    Ian Taylor for Villa.

David Fairclough - Liverpools "supersub" in the mid 70s to early 80s -

    Football League First Division (6): 1975–76, 1976–77, 1978–79, 1979–80, 1981–82, 1982–83
    League Cup (3): 1980–81, 1981–82, 1982–83
    FA Charity Shield (5): 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982
    European Cup (3): 1976–77, 1977–78, 1980–81
    UEFA Cup (1): 1975–76
    UEFA Super Cup (1): 1977

Nice haul for a part timer! ;)

I always understood "cult hero" to mean a player who may not have been widely known but had a certain cachet among fans of a club.

I don't see how the likes of Effenberg, Larson and Zanetti fit this description. Does Effenberg qualify by being a grumpy arsehole?

Jari Litmanen. Hugely rated by our fans and should never have left. One of many cult heros but my all-time favourite player.

Sure he does, he was as well known for his commitment and leadership as much as his ability.

He was always entertaining too, being a raving lunatic and and all.

Yeah, people are confusing "club legend" (aka Inzaghi, Kaka, Van Basten, Shevchenko, Baresi, Maldini, etc at Milan) and Cult Hero aka Serginho at Milan, Ole at United, Oleguer at Barca, etc.

I think he scored two goals for Bohs and both were against Rovers including one on his debut

If you like mindaugas Kalonas and watching Bohs in the rain, he's a full international, gonna score every game.

Super player and scored the winning goal against Rovers and the winning penalty in the FAI cup final in 08!

    For Man United

Solskjaer for just being magnificant professional and player
Forlan for his double over Liverpool, despite scoring about 3 other goals his whole United career.
Fortune would be another who made an OK career for himself.

I think the ultimate cult hero has to be Rod De Khors with Athlone.
So loved was he by the Athlone fans that one of them wrote a booke about him, titled after probably the best chant from any fans ever. :P

Who Needs Cantona...We've Got Rod De Khors!

Erik Meijer for Liverpool, not the best footballers going but even in the reserves he used to try his hardest.

Also drank with Liverpool fans before the Uefa Cup final in 2001

Samassi Abou, played up front, mostly as a substitute. The fans used to give a loud Abooooooooooooooooooooooou, when he got the ball, at first he thought they were booing him only to realise that they were calling his name. Scored a few goals also but he didn't have the greatest first touch with his goals coming from determination rather than class.

    For Tottenham:

Steffan Freund, Erik Thorstvedt, Gary Doherty to a certain extent (had his own chant).

Number 1 is Gary Doc, number 2 is Gary Doc......

Dominic Iorfa for Waterford Utd, joined us in about '99 I think and helped us avoid relegation scoring a few important goals along the way. I swear the guy didn't know the offside rule despite playing in various other countries before Ireland :D Wore yellow boots sometimes and when he left he gave them to the kit man who wore them for a couple of seasons afterwards

    031334.jpg

Jose Quitongo was another one, was loved at Waterford then left, ended up at Hearts and returned to The Blues near the end of his career. Celtic fans may remember him scoring a 94th minute equaliser at Tynecastle against The Hoops the season Celtic stopped the Rangers bid for 10 in a row
