Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The 'A' learner permit is unrestricted so after your IBT you can ride any size of bike on it.

For the 'A' category IBT training or test the bike must be at least 595cc 40KW.

It would depend what style of bike you like cruiser, sports, etc. but popular starting bikes would be the bandit, fazer or hornet 600's.

Best to get an insurance quote before you buy to make sure they will cover you on the bike you would like to get.

Is there a list of bikes that would be ok to Insure for anyone over 24. I'm even struggling to get a quote for an unrestricted 600 with a provisional. It's really starting to look like a Yamaha 660XT or something along those lines without having an advanced driving course done.

Thanks for that I think I'm leaning towards a Honda Deauville 650/700 i think it's prob the sensible route for the first few yrs and its seems to just about cover the criteria for the full A

Are you sure it covers you if you don't do your test before December, I think the power output goes up then so it might not do you for the full A Test in 2014.

How are you getting on with the quotes for it? Anyone ask you for a level 2 assessment yet?

I just passed the dtt on tue so havn got around to getting quotes yet I had a spin on a friends deauville (650) today and it felt quiet comfortable for starting off on but if that won't do for the full A Licence then I'll hav to look at something else :( thats y I'm on here lookin for advice off more experienced people, I'll hav to do a bit more research regarding changes in 2014 if that's the case because I might not b ready for my test b4 then but ya never know :)

Wrong! As a person who changed they're a lp into an a full less then a month ago I can say that an a lp is retricted to 25kw OR 0.16 kw/kg. This rwstriction is in place for 2 years after u get a full license. A lp is ALWAYS restricted to that.

got this off the rsa website if your over 24

You can apply after the 19th January 2013 for a Category A learner permit which allows you to ride a motorcycle of unrestricted power output. You can then take your driving test by presenting to the test in the representative vehicle which is a minimum of 595cm3 and an engine power of at least 40kW. If you pass the driving test, you will be issued with a Category A certificate of competency which you can exchange for a Category A full licence in your local Motor Taxation Office, and which is unrestricted.

so goin on this i think a deauville falls into this i hope

That was the OLD type A, from 19th of January the rules have changed, so Roadskill is correct!

Josh yes you are correct, you can then take your driving test by presenting to the test in the representative vehicle which is a minimum of 595cm3 and an engine power of at least 40kW.

Considering Deauville 650cc has 41kW as max output you fall in this category.

No, if you waited to apply after 19th you would have received full A2.

I didn't notice the November change on the RSA website is it wrote on there coz if that's the case bike choice over the nxt few months will be very important

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,325 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

I was on to liberty today they want the bike restricted to 25kw regardless of what the RSA say, tbh the whole thing is a bad joke, RSA say bike has to be X and the insurance companies are going no frigging way can you have insurance without restriction.

They've a talk to form here I think this whole unrestricted insurance needs to be trashed out with them there as they'll put nothing in writing, how can they ask for a restriction below what the RSA state you have to have as a minimum.

Yes have a look at the IBT information booklet, they have a copy of it on there website.

Please note that from November 2013 the motorcycle used for either IBT training or driving test purposes in Category 'A' must have a minimum power output of 50kw and an unladen mass of at least 180-kgs.

Thanks for the heads up, with that and the insurance company's they don't make it easy :(

List of bikes, weights and power are here http://www.magireland.org/a2-license-facts/ So basically you want something over 50KW and 180kg that's insurance friendly for starters.
I'll probably be spending that rest of the night trying to find a bike I like that ticks all the boxes.

As a matter of interest why are they changing it again?
