christ almighty, the damage to the hospital..

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,483 ✭✭✭weisses

24 children probably dead in the school alone ...... sad news:(

    meteorologists saying its an eF5

    2.25 mile wide

From clear skies to EF5 in less then an hour

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

7 Kids confirmed dead. They drowned in the school basement as it flooded. Another 25-30 missing from the same school.
And another school in the town was hit just as hard, but no news yet on if it was occupied. But it probably was due to the time the tornado hit.

The damage is bad enough, but for a town to lose so many young lives...it's devastating.

BBC also reporting 91 dead. Shocking!

Also read: The suburb of Moore, where today's damage was concentrated, was hit hard by a tornado in 1999 that included the highest winds ever recorded near the earth's surface.

'We've got big problems' says the weatherman, yeah I'll say.

Looking very bad. Multiple vortex violent
    tornado.

:( there was a lot of people let off work early to avoid the bad weather, who are now stuck on the highway in the midst of all this.

Two separate chase teams got hit in the El Reno tornado. One hit with debris and Tornado Hunters took a direct hit. They're ok though. Oklahoma getting pummelled this season.

Video of the guys getting hit severely by debris (try to ignore the annoying guy doing all the shouting):

Reports on Twitter that Tim Samaras and his son (Team Twistex) were killed in El Reno. Nothing confirmed as yet. Hope it's not true.

    Sad news indeed Penn :(

bsolutely devastating news breaking over here about the deaths of 3 veteran chasers involved in the El Reno EF3 Tornado.

It seems the source is very credible and the news is that Tim Samaras, His Son and Carl Young have lost their lives when their vehicle was hit when the tornado was nearly 2 miles wide.

I am absolutely devastated as have met Tim and Carl numerous times out here, and it seems they had no chance to outrun the tornado as it turned 90 degrees to the North back towards El Reno

    RIP Brothers in the Field

Sincerely hope it's just rumour mongering but that seems decreasingly likely. Such a sad day for the chaser community to lose Carl and Tim.

It seems that change of track caught a lot of people out. You can see it clearly below.

Its on the mainstream news in the US now so pretty much confirmed.
Tragic loss of such a legendary chaser his son and Carl.
He always came across as such an intelligent person and was always thinking safety first.

    RIP.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,033 ✭✭✭Simon Gruber Says

That's terrible news. I always admired Tim's skill as a chaser and knowledge of severe weather. RIP the three of them.

Just goes to show the unpredictability of these storms that even an extremely safety conscious person like Tim Samaras and others could be caught out by a sudden and extreme shift in direction.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 592 ✭✭✭hotwhiskey

    I can't believe this! Shocking.

    RIP.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,068 ✭✭✭Iancar29

Cannot believe the horrible news today .The Storm chasing world and science world has lost heros . Tim Samaras , his son Paul Samaras and Fellow storm chaser Carl Young died while chasing the incredibly violent and unstable EL Rino tornado in Oklahoma on Friday evening of which i was watching

One of my idols in the weather world and who i got the privilege to meet 2 years ago chasing in 2011. Tim and Carl were true scientists and are models for why storm chasing is important. No doubt the data they have collected over the years have gone into increasing warning times and also to improve structural engineering in storm prone areas.

RIP guys , you will truly be missed. Tim , now you can watch your skies of lightning light up from the clouds above.

Seemed like such a genuine person.

    Terrible tragedy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,068 ✭✭✭Iancar29

He really was , him and Carl both , they were very welcoming people when we met them one evening after a meal .

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

Terrible news, a big loss to that community. It was chilling seeing the tornado making that sudden turn on the radar at the time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 80 ✭✭phenomenalcat

Of them 3 tornadoes, any theories why the el Reno one would shift trajectory like that so sharply?
