Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If the prices confuse you, maybe you should take a look at how much this stuff costs new.

Ok , I just did. Christ on a bike! Never realised people would pay that kinda money to make a cup of coffee. Of course I'm a one cup of instant coffee a year person so you'll have to excuse my astonishment. :D

A modified Silvia is hard to beat, a bargain at that price too.

Anyone starting off should be seriously considering alleviating adrian522 of this gear!

Emigrating, with the prospect of upgrading :D

I will get pictures up of both soon. Silvia is just shy of a PID mod to make it fully loaded. Been a great machine for me. Even if I inherited it with that manky steam wand :D

    Hey folks.
So I added a few pics.
Will be throwing in the Base for the Silvia too.

I was hoping they would be a bit more popular then they have been!

    Few more bits to go.

I decided on a 53mm group instead of a 58 for my upgrade so I am left with the following if anyone is interested.
    • Silvia (58 group) Bottomless / Naked PF - 25 ono[Example]
    • 18gr VST basket (in box etc) - 25 ono
    • Tamper with black handle - 15 ono

I'll be back in Dublin this weekend if anyone fancies them. Let me know before Thursday however as I have to consider hand luggage limits :pac:

    Have PM'd both of you.
As I said, will be in Dublin on Friday and Saturday if you want to collect. Not sure what the postage charges would be on these things.

    Tamper left.
Looks sort of like this and comes with a short metal handle also.

Went with lagondola.it in the end as they have lots of good reviews.
There was a place in the UK but it had mixed reports.

It's footprint is about twice that of a Classic.
It was between the Mini 2 and an Alex Duetto 3. Went for the Mini 2 because my other half kept saying that the Alex looked like a man with its legs spread.

Tbh, once you get to the higher end HX and DB machines there is very little difference in the quality of Espresso from the machine. It mainly comes down to the skills of the Barista.

Nice to know but I thought these machines would have no need for a PID mod as they have them built in so consistency would be bang on all the time and the Gaggia falls on its arse when ya have a few around an want to make coffee for more than 4 people that all want steamed milk!

I'm very happy with my Classic all the same an I might just buy Silvia wand for now buy Im sitting on the fence atm thinking of the upgrade! :)

There's a bit more to consistency than the temp of the water. It does play a large part alright.
I think that when I was researching it the best term used was 'forgiveness factor'. Basically when you move up to the next tier from the Classic and Silvia some machines can be far more forgiving of bad technique.

I would recommend upgrading your steam wand to the Silvia, it is so much better to use and is fun to install. I added a v3 wand to my silvia, among some other modifications. I had always wanted to do a PID mod to the silvia and had considered something similar to the faustino mod for the classic.

Cheers Doodee, would the V3 fit the Classic an would you know where I could get one?

Thanks for hand delivering the VST basket Doodee... I'm sort of weirded out that it does actually make a difference to the shot! They're just pin holes in metal :-)

I'm not sure but I don't think so without some modification. For the classic you can use the old v2 Steam wand from the Silvia, can be purchased from here

If you haven't done it already, take the opportunity to adjust your OPV Pressure too. You can use the Backflush method to measure or if the forum members be so kind you might be able to borrow a gauge from someone.

Those two mods should keep you happy for quite a while.

    Haha, no worries!
I went through the same 'emotions' with the results in the cup. Are you using a naked PF? I got my best results with that pairing.
Talking with Kieran (PPC) recently and he was saying that he is having amazing results with his.
Maybe it IS time to resurrect the coffee porn thread :D

I started using 18g rather than 19g in my 18g basket and magic has started to happen.
Karl in Coffee Angel was explaining to me that its to do with the distance from the shower screen and the puck.
He also pointed me to http://www.fivesenses.com.au/blog/2013/02/06/andy-vst-baskets which is a good read.
