Hi all, just looking at my options. I'm 31, with an unused Bsc in IT Management that's 8 years old and a Masters in Music Technology that's relatively unused, I've been applying for jobs lately but to no avail.

I have a few questions, where can the Hdip be studied in Ireland and is there anywhere that does it online?

What's the best place to study a language and what's the certificate required to say i can speak a certain language, (exams etc.)

I'm seem completely lost with regards to what i should be looking for. i suppose right now i would like a job teaching or tutoring and then in a few years i might be ready for a dream job something multilingual i hope.

but im 31, am i kidding myself? society (and some other people) has me feeling old!!

Firstly, there aren't any jobs any more in teaching, unless you're prepared to pick up a couple of hours substituting.

No one seems to tell this to the people wanting to do the PGDE (previously H. Dip) so those courses, despite being very expensive, are very hard to get into. AFAIK they are run out of TCD, UCD, Maynooth, UCC and UCG. There may be others - not sure. DCU run a two year 'Dip' in the evenings which might suit someone working.

There is an online 'Dip' run by a company called Hibernia. http://hiberniacollege.com/

You would need to check whether the Teaching Council would recognise your degree for teaching. IT is not an examinable subject in the standard LC or JC, though it is a specialism in the LCA, so you would be unlikely to get any teaching hours for IT. Schools usually give IT to someone who is a bit handy with computers, but already employed to teach Maths or English or whatever. You might get further with the Music, but again it's not a subject offered in all schools.

As regards the languages, I don't know, sorry. If you wanted to teach a language you would need a primary degree in it, one recognised by the Teaching Council.

Sorry to be so pessimistic about the teaching situation. It's getting worse every year and still the PGDE courses spew out more newly qualified teachers.

    Hi there,

Just looking for a bit of advice please.

I am 32 and have an Honours Degree in Information Systems. I have been working in financial institution for the past 9 years. I have QFA exams done. I am looking to diversify - but unsure as to what I can do.

Does anyone know any part time evening course that I may benefit from? Im not in a position to leave my employer now but I just don't want to get rusty and be left behind - unskilled and outdated for down the road.

    Any advice would be appreciated
