I was driving a mazda 323C 1.5 and was insured with axa paying 1600 which i was happy with.

Three days ago i wanted to change my car so i decided to buy mazda 323 F model with exactly the same engine in it. Called up axa they gave me an exactly the same quote so i switched over my insurance to the other car and bought it. Over the period of 3 days iv changed lot of things in the engine as i love those cars. Decided to change spark plugs , all filter , cables , oil , tyres etc. I bought the car for 500 euro and invested nearly 600 in it because i was planning on driving it for another 5 years.

    Im a provisional driver btw.

Today coming back from college i get a phone call that my insurance has been cancelled because the car turned out to be a ja import and i need to pay 5000 for it now.

SO someone tell me where is the logic behind that im after loosing 1100 euro on the car which i could probably sell for 600 now because of a stupid brainless woman in axa who someone insured me on that car.

When i told them that this isnt right and if i wasnt insured in the first place wouldnt send money on that car and its their fault they told me that person doesnt work for them anymore and they cant do anything about it. Absolutely sick off the insurance companies in this country.

Did they ask the first time you spoke to them if the car was an import?

Any time I've rang any insurance co, after you give them the details of the car they go through their long scripted spiel of certain questions that you have to answer, one of them being "is the car an import?"

yeah she did ask me , i honestly didnt know thats why i rang up before buying , she went off and checked and said its all fine and put my name down on the car.

I think you may have an argument with them on this - the insurance company would have had access to car details when they input the reg. I deal with AXA and have problems with them. I have priced a car and everything fine until I put the reg in and then suddenly - that's an import - sorry we can't quote.

They should have known nearly straightaway from the reg the exact car details.
The delay in informing you is unacceptable and I think you could try and get them to stand over it in the circumstances.

Also the fact the girl isn't there anymore could be an indication that she was at fault and it's their error - not yours. Argue that you would not have bought the car if you had been told correct info and that you are now at a loss. Threaten legal action maybe?

Iv tried argueing with them , they told me she doesnt work there anymore , asked for the manager the one i was talking to she said she was one , asked for her name she wouldnt tell me and told me to make a customer complaint ...

I am at a big loss as i got rid off my old car all my savings went towards this one , have no money left and i need a car to travel to college im stuck at the moment.

Who travels to college with you everyday out of interest? Couldn't you travel as a passenger in their car for a while?

If you told them that it was a jap import and they quoted you anyway then they should be expected to honour the quote. Don't let them fob you off.

Basic principle of contract law: offer and acceptance.

Provided you didn't withhold any information/provide wrong info I reckon they'll have to honour their offer.

One of my friends always travels with me , i live in a horrible place where i cant get a lift with anyone and buses are horrible.

And just out of curiosity i wonder what wouldve happened if i like wrapped myself around a pole , died in an accident or killed someone in an accident would they be telling me i wasnt covered with insurance ?

Im going to try and do something about this.

But your a provisional driver.....Why haven't you passed your test yet? It would seem to me a few driving lessons would ultimately save you cash n the long run.

    <SNIP> Off-topic removed

I cant move companys because it turned out that the car i bought is a jap import. But the only thing that bugs me i knew right well about jap imports and called them up before buying on purpose so i wouldnt buy one ....

I assume they are fully licensed. Reason I ask is because gardai are cracking down and issuing penalty points which won't help you.

MIBI would most likely step in. Certainly would for the third party.

Try other insurance companies inc specialist high excess ones. Get the test done. In all honesty Ireland is an aberration in allowing provisional drivers insurance in their own names in the first place. The cost of it is proportionate to what they have to pay out in injuries etc.

Please do not discuss insurance in general. Stick to the original topic.

OP - it appears that when you were looking for the quotation, you replied that you didn't know if it was a Japanese import. If she checked and said it was OK, then the fault appears to lie with Axa.

I would proceed to make an official complaint to Axa, and be prepared to follow up with the Financial Ombudsman. Your call was probably recorded and you can request that they review the call.

Moving to the Banking & Insurance & Pensions forum

    Sorry my bad went OT.

OP My brother-in-law has a successful claim with the ombudsman. Try that complaints procedure.
