Expert witness - fees

Just wondering if anyone out there could advise me if the following Expert Witness(EW) fee sounds a bit excessive. The EW is being hired for attendance at a labour court hearing so not a typical court case, he is being hired as back up in order to be able to define some technical/contractual terms if required so he probably has some 'home work' to do but not a huge amount. The fee being quoted is €2,300 plus VAT which from what I can see is for maybe half a days prep work, and half a day for attendance at hearing at which he may not even be asked to contribute anything. So roughly €200 per hr give or take? Would be interested to know if this is typical or should I look else where?

expert witness fees are always crazy but of course look elsewhere! It's like anything, you shop around.

    Appears very expensive.

A highly qualified medical consultant would be in range of €750 - 1500 a day.

I suggest you would get a solicitor or barrister practising labour law to give evidence on definitions for a lot less than the figure quoted.

A solicitor or barrister may not be expert enough to define terms of art in a particular industry. I am puzzled as to why an expert witness is needed at all. What the labour court is doing is construing a contract i.e. deciding what the parties meant when they entered the agreement.
